16-year-old lost her role in the school play weeks after her father passed away — her teacher’s cruel explanation left a lasting scar
Losing a loved one is one of life's hardest experiences, and receiving support during that time matters most. But when someone says something hurtful instead, those words can stay with you for years. Instagram user Mil, who goes by @mil.rousseau, shared in a video posted on March 3, 2026, the worst thing anyone had ever said to her after her father died. Although nearly two decades have passed, she said the comment still affects her whenever she thinks about it.
Mil explained that she was just 16 years old when her dad passed away suddenly. About two and a half weeks later, she returned to school even though his funeral had not yet taken place because his death required an autopsy and inquest. While still trying to cope with her grief, she hoped to continue rehearsing for the school play. However, during the third week after his death, she found that her role had been given to another student. When she questioned the decision, a dance teacher allegedly told her that her father "wouldn't be very proud" of how she had been behaving. Mil said that even now, nearly 20 years later, recalling that moment still makes her heart race.
Mil explained that rehearsals took place three times a week during lunch, immediately after the therapy sessions she was required to attend following her father's death. She shared that she was emotionally exhausted and could not put her full energy into the rehearsals. When she spoke to her drama teacher about losing her role, the teacher told her she hadn't been putting in enough effort. During the conversation, a visiting dance teacher interrupted and said that Mil should try harder and that she should want to make her father proud by doing her best.
Mil still questions the teacher's surprising remark. According to her, the teacher responded by saying that although her own father hadn't died, she had lost her grandfather and therefore understood how Mil felt. The comparison left Mil even more shocked, emphasizing that her father had died suddenly at the age of 44 when she was only 16. She had been forced to return to school before they had even held his funeral. She pointed out that sharing a two-decade-old experience still made her tremble. She concluded the video by saying that the words people choose when someone is grieving matter because they can leave a lasting impact that is never forgotten.
What Mil experienced also aligns with what researchers have found about the lasting impact of words during grief. A study published in the Journal of Loss and Trauma found that the most hurtful condolences were often comments that tried to explain or justify the death or downplayed the person's loss. On the other hand, the most helpful responses were those that simply gave grieving people the space to mourn. Mil's story shows how a single insensitive comment can stay with someone long after the loss itself.
