3 teens stopped to help a stranger with a flat tire — then noticed one detail that turned it into a 911 emergency
You never know the impact a small gesture can have on a person. Something as simple as asking someone if they're okay can mean a lot. A group of teenagers from Florida reached out to a 65-year-old, Diego Fernandez Delgado, after they noticed him struggling to change his tire. However, when they approached him, one of them noticed something unusual. According to a report by CBS News on May 15, 2026, the trio jumped into action and ultimately saved the man's life.
The teenagers, identified as Logan Royer, 16, Cody Magrone, 16, and Brody Murray, 17, from Cooper City High School, had stopped by a McDonald's and were heading out for fishing when they noticed Delgado had pulled over to the side of the road, as reported by USA Today. While Magrone and Murray helped him with the tires, Royer noticed something was off. "I noticed him sitting in the passenger seat, and he was breathing heavily and sweating a lot, not really speaking to me," he recalled. He was even holding his chest and appeared uncomfortable. After asking if he was okay, the trio decided to dial 911. They guided the medics to their location and waited until help arrived. They found the 65-year-old sitting on the ground. The old man was suffering from a heart attack, as confirmed by the first responders.
Delgado's phone battery had died, and in pain, he couldn't even communicate what was wrong properly. He "prayed" for help to arrive. To his relief, the three youngsters noticed him, stopped, and came to his aid, making all the difference. Royer noted how he thought the stranger was having a heat stroke at first. Yet, they didn't wait or ignore the situation and immediately took action. While medics arrived to check on the driver, the trio helped load the jack and the tires back into his trunk.
Delgado's son, Cristian Fernandez, was worried when he learned that his father was unable to get help. "God didn't send angels with wings, he sent those boys," he expressed. City leaders heaped praise on the three teens for their act of kindness. They were honored at Cooper City Hall on May 12. Hailing the teens for their good gesture, Cooper City Mayor James Curran said, "These young men saw someone in need and didn't hesitate. They stepped out, and they saved a life. That's what Cooper City's all about." The 65-year-old has returned from the hospital after undergoing treatment and other procedures and remains grateful to the youngsters for their response.
