4 siblings battled the same symptoms for a decade — then the family dog’s old diagnosis finally cracked the mystery
Symptoms like headaches, fatigue, and so on are associated with minor and major health conditions. It’s hard to get an accurate diagnosis, especially when there are no obvious signs pointing to a specific illness. An Instagram user named Makalea, who goes by @heymakalea, shared a post on June 1, 2026, about how she and her three siblings experienced something similar. In a report from Newsweek on Monday, June 22, 2026, the woman revealed that it was only after nearly a decade of discomfort that she and her siblings finally learned what was wrong with them, thanks to their pet dog, Molly.
For years, Makalea and her siblings experienced symptoms like fatigue, headaches, intense joint pain, and other flu-related signs. Around the same time, their dog started developing a bullseye rash, typically associated with Lyme disease. They took her to the vet, where the condition was confirmed. Molly was given antibiotics and recovered soon afterward. Meanwhile, the siblings went from doctor to doctor but were unable to understand what was happening. It was almost like they had a mystery illness. It took around 10 years for Makalea and her siblings to learn that they, too, were battling the same condition.
Lyme disease was never considered because none of the four ever had a bullseye rash. However, things began to make sense when Makalea recalled pulling a tick or two from her own skin. According to her, the idea that the rash is the only indicator of Lyme disease is one of the biggest myths about the condition. Once she received a diagnosis, her siblings also got answers over the next few years. They could not believe that even doctors never suspected the condition, and their beloved pet had helped them solve the mystery. Molly lived a healthy life until she passed away at the age of 16.
According to Mayo Clinic, the most common sign of the illness is a rash. However, several other symptoms can help identify the condition, including fever, headaches, and extreme tiredness. In later stages, people may also experience severe muscle pain, numbness, and joint pain. This was likely what Makalea and her siblings went through because they were untreated for so long. They were later found to have other related infections, including Bartonella, Babesia, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Ever since, the woman has been spreading awareness through her experience. After years of treatment, Makalea has regained about 90% of her health.
May was Lyme Disease Awareness Month, and she mentioned that many people wait to see an obvious rash or similar signs before seeking medical attention. Her message is simple — look for ticks, and if you have concerns or are experiencing flu-like symptoms, get checked. Commenters shared their own experiences as well. @armineklecka said, “As a child, I never found a tick or got a rash, only found out when I couldn't physically walk anymore.” @anastasiapetridis remarked, “My mom got Lyme disease during Covid, and every single doctor was convinced she had Covid even though every test came back negative.” @becca12_13 added, “Was not expecting that plot twist.”
