9th-grader picked a heavier girl for his basketball team despite his friends’ criticism — her three-word response hit him like a thousand bricks
Teenage years are usually about being cool or doing things that provide a sense of identity and make you popular. Facebook user Oliver admitted that his years were no different. In a post shared on June 10, 2026, he revealed that in the ninth grade, he was chosen as the captain of one team for a basketball game during gym class. While picking teammates, he decided that one of the students who was rarely selected should get a chance to play, and chose a girl, whom he described as being on the “heavier” side. What she said stayed with him even years later.
As any captain would, Oliver likely wanted to pick the best players to win. However, in that moment, he noticed a classmate sitting at the back, away from everyone, probably already aware that no one would choose her. The then-14-year-old knew that she was often selected last because she wasn’t very sporty and didn’t look athletic either. He chose her, and immediately, his friends questioned his decision. Even she couldn’t believe what she’d heard. When she came over, she stood behind him, feeling insecure and hesitant. However, the teen insisted she was his teammate and asked her to stand beside him. That’s when she asked, “Are you sure?” That question hit him like a thousand bricks.
In that moment, Oliver realized how the race to choose the most popular and athletic students often left everyone else struggling to find a sense of belonging, quietly believing the silent but harsh judgment that they didn’t belong. Being picked last time after time had created a heartbreaking belief in the girl’s mind. She had grown used to being ignored, and the young man couldn’t fathom how cruel that seemed. When she asked him that question, he confidently replied, “Absolutely.” From then on, he decided to choose students who were often left out. He admitted that class was one of the best he ever had, because there was no pressure to perform, just a chance to work together and do their best.
According to the National Institutes of Health, loneliness in teenage years can have severe impacts on young people. It is associated with “depression, anxiety, social anhedonia (disinterest in social interactions), and increased health risks.” It was also noted that prolonged or repeated social disconnection can cause youngsters to withdraw from others. While a majority are making memories, isolated teens might be struggling with battles in their minds. Oliver only realized that when his hesitant classmate asked him that question, and his kindness didn’t go unrecognized.
On their graduation day, the girl approached Oliver again. “I still remember when you picked me first,” she said to him. “That was the only time I was picked first for anything in school,” she added. Her words prompted the young man to share a message — Open your eyes and take note of people around you. Don’t treat them like they're nobody; it takes very little to be gentle.
