Trigger warning: This story contains themes of violence that some readers may find distressing.

Listening and observing intently and following one’s instincts can help massively. It might take a small action like a phone call but it can make a difference. A prominent example is that of an Amazon diver who saved a life while on duty, as reported by PEOPLE. The man was making a delivery at home when the woman in the house whispered two words to him. He listened and observed the situation carefully in the few seconds he had while handing over the delivery. He quickly dialed 911, reported the situation and saved the woman’s life. In an arrest affidavit obtained by the outlet from the Indian River County Sheriff's Office, the details of what followed were revealed.

The driver was delivering a package to a home and the woman who answered the door whispered the words, “Help me.” The driver couldn’t spot anything else in the brief moment he had contact with the woman. He quickly called 911 and reported the situation, stating that it was a “suspicious scene,” per KBTX. An Indian River County Sheriff deputy was dispatched to the home and found the woman seated on the porch with a 43-year-old man named Frank Mandolini. The deputy noticed that the woman “appeared in distress and had obvious red marks on her neck.”

Mandolini was previously married to the woman and had still been living together. When she was taken away from the man, she revealed that she needed help. The victim recalled getting into an argument with the accused. Things quickly got heated to a point where Mandolini grabbed her by the neck and began choking her violently. He persisted in his attempt till the woman almost lost consciousness and blacked out. He let go before she could pass out. According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, around 12 million people become victims of rape, physical violence or stalking from intimate partners every year.

Around 14.8% of women in the US have been injured due to rape, violence or stalking by intimate partners. 48.4% of all women in the US have faced psychological aggression by their partners in their lifetime. It is crucial to seek help or speak up in such situations. The Hotline offers 24/7 assistance for all. Mandolini was informed of the charges and he denied them, claiming that he did grab her neck but not to the point where she lost breath. The man has previously faced a domestic violence battery charge and, after further investigation, was charged with one count of felony battery by strangulation.

Mandolini was taken to jail, where he eventually had a $30,000 bond posted in his name. It was also discovered that a child lived in the house with the duo and so the Florida Department of Children and Families was also notified of the situation. The man has also been ordered not to contact the woman. The Amazon driver was lauded by people on the internet. As a silent angel in disguise, he voiced his doubts when he felt something was suspicious. It was his call that helped authorities discover the woman suffering and render help in time.
