Australian woman lost her valuable iPad in the US—a Reddit post led to the unimaginable 2 years later

Losing your belongings while traveling can be a huge hassle. It can be especially challenging when the item is an electronic device with tons of important information. A woman who had travelled to Columbus, Ohio, from Sydney, Australia, found herself in a difficult situation when she lost her iPad during her trip. The device was expensive and had a lot of her photos and 2D animation projects on it. So, she was pretty devastated about it, until a notification popped up on her phone two years later, per a Reddit post by the woman (u/intrepidturnipz.)

"Hey guys, I'm an Australian young woman joining this in hopes of, I don't know, a miracle." The woman added, "Last night I got an email that someone tried to access my iPad and sent me the location and I was able to see it is now in Columbus, Ohio, with some new happy owners." She sent a message that the iPad "Lost and found" allowed a person and no one had called or messaged her after that. "So I guess it’s safe to say my iPad is stolen?" The woman didn't know what to do and felt "pretty silly" calling the police as she lived in Australia. But she was quite upset that she had lost her projects, photos and her expensive device while someone was "happily in possession" of it.

"I still haven’t gotten a new iPad because I can’t justify the cost and felt I had to take the loss." Her iPad was still 9,467 miles away from home at that time, and she hoped someone could help her. "I’m wondering if anyone has any advice - If it wouldn’t be ridiculous to let the police know and if they would have any way of sending it back to me (I’d pay all shipping costs obviously)." It had been eight days since the woman wrote the post at the time of writing and someone reached out to her through the comments on the same day. u/KyleeTheShinyStealer wrote, "Sent you a message! My company works with used technology and our office is located right there. I can almost guarantee it's in my office."
In an update, the woman revealed, "An employee (u/kyleetheshinystealer) saw this post because apparently it’s a used electronics shop and I’ve sent them through my serial number, who they in turn have sent through to their boss." She added, "So, my fingers are crossed that they will find it and hopefully we can sort something out so that it can get posted and make its way back home! Feels very Finding Nemo to me right now." In another update, "I’ve emailed them, they’ve emailed me back to confirm they have it and just needed more details from me, I’ve emailed back details and waiting for their reply to see what the process is!"

She confirmed that she might be able to get the iPad back as the delivery had been confirmed through email. She eventually got the iPad back, even though the data was not on it. "Unfortunately, the data isn’t on it, and it got a bit cracked. But a wiped, cracked iPad is better than no iPad! I’m still over the moon. It’s sad about my lost animations, but I now have my tool back to make more!" she added as a conclusion. The woman eventually shared an email that confirmed that her iPad was on its way to Sydney.
