Bakery owner accused Uber driver of stealing $3,000 worth of cinnamon rolls — days later, the truth made her apologize publicly
What may first seem like an intentional crime can sometimes take a completely different turn once the missing pieces of the story come to light. Julie Pierre, owner of South Florida bakery Roll and Dough, initially believed an Uber courier had taken nearly 400 cinnamon rolls worth thousands of dollars after the delivery did not arrive. However, on August 28, 2026, Pierre posted a clarification on the bakery’s Instagram page, @therollanddough, after detectives informed her what had actually happened, prompting her to apologize for accusing the driver.
The situation arose when a delivery of about 400 cinnamon rolls went missing that Pierre had sent via an Uber courier to a farmers market. When the pastries failed to arrive, the bakery believed the driver had disappeared with them. According to NBC 6 South Florida, the business contacted Uber and was advised to file a police report. At the time, Pierre said they had limited information about what had happened and genuinely believed the rolls had been stolen. The story took a turn and became much clearer when Sunrise Police confirmed that the driver, Ivan Dario Rico Molano, had been detained by U.S. Border Patrol while he was on the way to deliver the order. A CBP spokesperson said Molano, a Colombian citizen, was stopped on Interstate 95 after a records check and was taken into custody for immigration processing.
He had entered the U.S. legally in 2021 but had remained beyond his authorized period of stay. The cinnamon rolls were still inside the vehicle. After Molano was detained, he contacted someone to take possession of the car, and a family member later found the bakery's containers and drove them straight to the police station. Julie Pierre was then able to recover the entire delivery, turning what initially looked like a case of theft into a very different situation.
In her follow-up video, Pierre made it clear that she did not support ICE or policies that separate families. She said, “I did not get Ivan detained or deported,” and explained that his detention had already happened before the bakery filed its police report. She also asked people not to place the blame for his detention on her, saying the situation was “so much bigger than just the cinnamon rolls.”
Pierre said she was “deeply sorry for Ivan and his family” and hoped they would be reunited. She also said Roll and Dough planned to donate part of its proceeds toward the family's legal aid. Her clarification drew mixed emotions from viewers. @ron.douglas summed up the unexpected turn by writing, “Wow, this has been such a roller coaster.” Meanwhile, @palmettopastry said, “I'm glad the situation was resolved, and I'm so happy you made this follow-up post. Keep up the good work!!” @churlishmay19 wrote, “Such a heartbreaking turn of events.”
A similar story shows just how easily a situation that looks like an obvious crime can turn out to be something completely different. In another case, a couple was accused of stealing $3,000 worth of merchandise after surveillance footage and a matching license plate appeared to place them at the scene. But when police took a closer look, they discovered that someone had stolen the couple’s rear license plate and used it on a similar Subaru, leaving the couple to prove they were nowhere near the crime.
