Resources for assistance and care in emergencies can make a significant difference for elderly and vulnerable individuals in an area. However, help came in from an unexpected source for an 87-year-old who had no one to give her food on one particular day during the pandemic. So the Florence woman called the police and explained her situation. Soon enough, two officers turned up at her doorstep, ready to put her out of a difficult predicament, according to a post by the State Police of Italy, who go by @poliziadistato on Instagram.

"At Florence, an 87-year-old lady waited in vain for her caregiver to return for dinner," the post began. Her son was away and she was alone at home, forced to be in bed because of her illness. "While she was in despair, she had the idea to call the police." The story went on, "A Volante went to Coverciano where the woman lives and thanks to a neighbor, the police were able to enter the house with great joy." They explained, "The two officers did well at the ovens and prepared a nice dish of ravioli with sauce that the lady ate with them." In the photo, two officers could be seen serving food to the woman who sat in her wheelchair with a smile on her face.

The incident happened during the pandemic, so the officers were wearing masks. The post received more than 32,000 likes. According to the National Institute of Aging, many elderly people prefer staying at home or "aging in place." But if one wants to do that, certain things need to be planned ahead to make living independently possible. Looking into government resources and having emergency numbers handy is an important part of living independently as a senior with mobility issues or illnesses. Many people in the comments section of the post appreciated the police's prompt action for the elderly woman in need of assistance.

@enzaeromolo wrote, "Well done, guys, you are our pride. Thank you for everything you have done, do and will do for us." @alessandra_siena_17 commented, "With everything that is going on in the world, reading this news fills your heart with joy." @marinella.arbi.54 remarked, "I find this to be a big honor, truly... to the gun... Congratulations... But that caregiver though... I hope he has a motive... If not, you can't explain such behavior. This is serious." @carretero4597 shared, "You have a heart of gold. Thank you so much to the police teams and other people who are helping everyone get through this pandemic better. Thank you so much to everyone. Greetings from Spain."

@bianchigiorgia7 expressed, "You are truly great! But with a big, big heart! Way to go! The elders are our responsibility. But the spontaneous question arises: Where was the caregiver? I hope they filed a complaint for abandonment and how come they didn’t call the children? This shows that there is a parental relationship concern. Good thing the neighbor had his keys." @stefanoacque pointed out, "You are great, humble, unsung heroes and workers who contradict the silence of the dignity of small daily gestures, the vain confusion of squares full of 'events' of our time. Thank you."
