When someone feels responsible for helping their family financially, having a partner who understands that commitment can mean a great deal. A Reddit user who goes by u/Fancy_Incident5635 shared a post on August 14, 2026, recalling how she had no problem with her boyfriend giving his sister financial assistance every month. She never questioned his decision, but one day, when she sat down to have a casual chat with the woman, the truth was exposed. She later learned where the money had actually been going.

The girlfriend noted that she and her partner had been together for three years. Throughout, she had been supportive of his choices and had even helped him out financially when required. She mentioned that he was giving $600 to his sister every month because she needed it. The woman never clarified or checked because, to her, helping family was important. During a conversation with the sister, she simply asked how things were and whether her money problems were getting better. That’s when his sibling revealed that he had not given her anything in years. After asking more questions, she discovered the $600 was going to his ex.

She didn’t get any more clarification on why or how, but the fact that her partner chose to hide this from her left her enraged. What hurt her most was that she was the one spending when his finances were tight. She recalled that when they moved in, she paid the security deposit from her savings because he didn’t have the money for it. She mentioned that she planned to confront her partner about the matter. The man’s actions could be defined as financial infidelity, wherein a person hides or engages in financial practices without the knowledge of their partner. According to Smith Strong, data from the National Endowment for Financial Education showed that 42% of Americans lie to their partners about their financial habits.

Another study from the organization revealed that 39% of people have hidden “a purchase, bank account, statement, bill, or cash” from their significant others. This causes turmoil in relationships and also shakes the very foundation of trust. Commenters also agreed that this was a form of deception and had to be taken seriously. The fact that the money was going to his ex made it even worse. u/RandomA9981 said, “If he’s sending her $7,200 a year, it’s highly unlikely that they aren’t physically involved. Unless it’s for child support.” u/WorkingGlass6136 said, “This is why I can't date anymore. It’s just getting worse.” u/Striking_Emu_Dancer remarked, “He's a loser, and you deserve better.”

It’s strange how, to many, cheating only means being physically involved with another person. Any form of infidelity, be it verbal, digital, emotional, financial, or otherwise, is unacceptable. In another instance, a woman ended her engagement after learning of her fiancé’s actions. When she met his parents, she overheard them talking to their son about how his ex was amazing. They even mentioned a collaboration between her fiancé and his former partner, and he clarified that it was in progress, revealing that he was still in contact with her. The woman had no idea this had been going on behind her back and immediately ended things.
