Bride was devastated after groom called off the wedding — her bold move with the wedding cake turned heads online
Heartbreaks are devastating, and that's exactly what happened with 24-year-old Carissa Gibbs when her high school boyfriend called off their wedding just a few weeks before their big day. Gibbs (@carissannicole) shared a video of her difficult experience on TikTok for people going through similar situations. The footage showed Gibbs and her best friend, Anna Sianipar, eating the wedding cake with their bare hands. The video, captioned "When my ex dumped me right before the wedding, so my bestie and I picked up the wedding cake and ate it anyway,"
Sharing her experience, Gibbs said that even after the cancellation of her wedding, she decided to pick the cake because she had already paid for it and it was "symbolic," reported PEOPLE. Her friends also encouraged her to view the positive aspects of life. They helped her to realize that he was not the one. Gibbs added, "Even though I was devastated, I decided to eat the cake anyway. Sometimes the worst things that happen to you end up being a blessing in disguise," according to the outlet. "My bestie Anna was there to remind me that I was alone. Having her eat the cake reminded me that being dumped suddenly and having my life plans changed didn't have to mean that everything I knew and loved would leave me. She was still there for me."
She explained how it took her a long time to realize that the way she picked herself up from such a traumatic experience was one of the "strongest things" she's ever done. "I've realized that I shouldn't have made myself feel small or weak. I didn't let that experience devastate my life. I poured myself into amazing friendships, graduated with honors, jump-started my career, and learned how to feel confident. If that hadn't happened to me, I would have never realized that I was capable of great things," she told the outlet. Gibbs said that even her world was shattered due to the incident. "I couldn't force him to stay, so I decided to rebuild my own new world without him in it." The video struck a chord with viewers and drew an outpouring of support for her, with several wishing her strength.
"He fumbled, so don't be sad for too long," commented @moonlit_princess1999. @lunaticfringexbjey said, "I love the vibe this gives off." @lilyannaliseey related to the video and said, "This healed me." @lifeasannabanana also commented, saying, "I think we coped in the best way possible." @pixiepunch43 commented, "My fiancé hates cake, so I'm probably going to have one mini round cake with just a bunch of cupcakes for the guests.
Gibbs not only healed herself but also motivated people to "never lose individuality in a relationship." She shared that she became strong and resilient, and after the terrifying breakup, she set higher standards for herself and fell in love again with her now-fiancé, Elijah George. She will be marrying George next summer, with her best friend Anna by her side as the bridesmaid. She said her split changed her life "for good," and George not only reassured her but also helped her trust people again. Whenever she felt anxious about her engagement, George would hug her and say, "This time it's really going to happen," she shared.
