Bullied monkey wasn’t allowed into the zoo’s only shaded spot as rain poured — then a zookeeper broke a rule and melted hearts
We all know the sinking feeling of being caught in harsh weather with nowhere to hide. At Ichikawa Zoo in Japan, a monkey named Punch seemed to face that moment. He was seen clinging to a cold door on a rainy day after being cast out from the only sheltered space available. However, one zookeeper's quick thinking and kind gesture provided the baby monkey some respite, and the internet's heart melted. The clip posted under the handle @punchthegreat on February 25, 2026, has since earned 1.5 million likes and over 8000 comments.

The other adult monkeys at the zoo reportedly did not welcome Punch to seek shelter in the common room. Therefore, the little one was left searching for safety during such weather. Upon finding none, he desperately tried to shelter himself against the door. That is when a zookeeper stepped in, despite strict protocols against feeding the monkeys during wet conditions. He began tossing food to the other monkeys gathered inside the sheltered area. That drew their attention and slowly lured them away from the entrance.

The zookeeper, like many other animal lovers, chose compassion over duty. As the other monkeys moved out to grab the snacks, he quickly stepped toward Punch and carefully carried him inside. In the video, the keeper also accompanies the monkey, probably to ensure he does not feel alone. The comment section was filled with empathy for the monkey and praise for the zookeeper. Many sent blessings and warm wishes to the keeper. @jgg895 remarked, "May this man always have a cold pillow, a warm meal, and get all the love in the world he deserves!"
Meanwhile, @santanak1ng praised, "We love this guy, he needs a raise." In a funny twist, several women jokingly declared the zookeeper one of the most eligible bachelors around. They also admitted the sweet moment had won them over. @thebrookebrooks expressed, "Are we just collectively in love with this young man at this point?" Others really want the keeper to adopt Punch, just like @ashtiktok1111 mentioned, "That man’s going to adopt Punch, I just can’t prove it yet."
Recently, the same zookeeper, Shunpei Miyakoshi, provided a few updates about Punch to CNN on March 15, 2026. He said the monkey is not facing the rough situations he used to. “Now he’s communicating with other monkeys, and it’s great to see him reaching those milestones,” he said. In fact, the primate is also learning to communicate and hug other monkeys.
