The next few seconds transformed her life.
At the time, as an 18-year-old business student working part-time as a Starbucks barista, she was exhausted after receiving rejection after rejection on her job applications. One day, she noticed a confident man walk into the cafe. On looking him up, she realized he was a famous entrepreneur who was working with multiple startups. Knowing she only had a few seconds before he walked away, she handed him his drink and said, "I would love to work for you." Although the businessman looked surprised, she introduced herself, explained that Starbucks was only her part-time job, and told him she was studying business. Before leaving, he handed her his email address. As soon as she got home, she wrote what she jokingly described as "a three-paragraph essay with a thesis and supporting evidence" explaining why she'd make a great employee. Eventually, she was hired, and today, at 28 years old, she has a startup of her own.
