Candidate called HR to decline a job offer and kept apologizing — but her unexpected response left them stunned
Hiring processes are often standard and restricted to formal settings. However, what makes interactions stand out, for the interviewer and applicant, is when humanity is combined with professionalism. Lina, a Threads user and HR professional, recently shared such an experience in a post on Sunday, May 24, 2026, through the account @lina_839298. She described a situation where an interviewee called to decline an offer but sounded unsure and kept apologizing while doing so. When she asked the reason behind it, the applicant gave an honest reply. Instead of choosing a formal and standard response, Lina said something unexpectedly heartwarming.
The candidate called to inform HR that they couldn't go ahead with the offer. “Can I ask what made you choose the other company?” she inquired. After a short pause, the interviewee explained that “the role there is closer to what I really want to do.” Instead of reacting negatively, Lina mentioned that she "respected" the honesty and responded in a way that shifted the tone completely. She told them, “Then go for it with confidence. I’m rooting for you.” The words were simple, but they left the applicant surprised. They confessed that they never expected her to say something so kind. However, Lina added, "Losing good candidates is disappointing sometimes. But I still want to be the kind of HR who supports people’s lives — even when they don’t choose us."
The moment highlighted how rare it can feel for professional decisions to be met with encouragement rather than pressure. Lina later reflected that even though it is never easy to lose a potential recruit, the way she responds matters just as much as the outcome itself. It became a reminder that professional interactions do not have to end on a formal note, but can still carry goodwill and respect for the future. In another instance, one young mother reached out to a manager after her babysitter canceled just before an interview and asked if she could bring her 8-month-old baby along. She was feeling nervous, and the baby was fussy throughout the process. She kept pausing to calm him while answering questions and was repeatedly apologizing.
The manager then paused and assured her, “That’s literally the job: handling chaos while staying professional. You’re already proving you can do it,” and added, “Working parents, especially mothers, are some of the most organized, efficient, and resilient people you’ll ever hire,” which left her emotional and deeply relieved. He was impressed by her calmness under pressure and decided to hire her on the spot, later describing her as an excellent addition to the team.
