Couple bought a $5 flag at flea market — had no idea it would help a fallen marine's mother find closure

The human mind needs reasoning and closure to comprehend happenings, especially if they’re upsetting, heartbreaking, unexpected and feel unfair. A woman named Patsy Maciel, mother of late Lance Corporal Fred Maciel, received a much-needed closure about her son after a couple approached her with an American flag, per CBS News. Lanie and Walter Brown were shopping at the Beaumont flea market in Hemphill, Texas, and bought a $5 flag, per KHOU. However, an observation pushed them to give the flag to the bereaved mother and the feeling was bittersweet.

The late Fred passed away at the age of 20 in a helicopter crash in Fallujah, Iraq, in 2005. Along with him, 30 other American servicemen were killed in the crash. It is considered to be the single largest loss of American lives in Iraq and Afghanistan, per CBS News. Words can’t explain what the mom may have felt when she got the news of her son’s sudden death. Decades after his passing, it is hard to fathom what kind of grief holds her heart. According to Very Well Mind, closure is something people crave when they lose a relationship or a loved one.

Patsy, too, must have been holding pain throughout the years and the flag had a special element that helped bring some relief. The Browns purchased the flag from the flea market and realized it was more than just a flag. There were over 2 dozen tribute messages written to Maciel on that flag, from Marines in honor of his brave sacrifice. Walter, whose son is a marine, instantly realized its importance.

There was no doubt that the flag had to go to Fred’s family — and not casually but with dignity, heartfelt empathy and respect. "It's a lot deeper than just putting it in the mailbox and shipping it over. It had to be hand-delivered," he said. The couple contacted the mom on Facebook and it was revealed that the mom had no idea about the existence of the flag. At the time of her son’s tragic passing, she received a flag to wrap his coffin but this one was unheard of. “Tributes delayed nine and a half years, I can’t wait to read what they wrote,” Patsy said.

Some of the messages read, "We'll always remember the sacrifice you made," “Thank you for being who you were ... Rest in peace.” The flag was handed over with a ceremony, per USA Today. Knowing about the tributes, a sense of pride, pain, love and so much more came to the mom. "I got peace in my heart. You know, I'm happy. This is all for my son. Nobody forgot my son,” she remarked. The late Lance Corporal, who had an avid love for service to his country, had joined before he could even graduate. “It is kind of like a piece of my son. It sounds crazy but that is a piece of my son coming back to me and I love them for that,” she remarked. "His dream was to be a Marine and I had to let him do that. I'm proud of him and that he died doing what he loved," the mom added.
