A customer who goes by u/Own-Depth-7817 revealed how a heartless delivery driver laughed in their face after receiving a $5 tip on a $20 order. The person noted that they gave what they felt was right based on their calculation, but the worker was far from pleased or grateful. In the Reddit post shared on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, they recalled a statement the man made that left them speechless.
The entire process, right from ordering up to the point the delivery man came to the door, seemed fine. The customer thanked him before giving him $5. The employee immediately looked at the money and started laughing. “This is all you’re going to tip?” he asked. The person was left stunned. Out of all the responses they had expected, this attitude certainly wasn’t on the list. While they chose not to say anything to start an argument, the driver started swearing under his breath while walking back to his car. That’s when they spoke up, “Be grateful for what you get. I didn’t have to tip you, but I still chose to give you something.” Yet, it had no effect, and the worker kept swearing until he drove off.
The customer explained that while they understood tips are crucial for such workers since a majority of their income comes from them, they also said that the money should be given based on the order and service. On a $20 bill, $5 didn’t seem too little. To add to it, they noted that the store was less than 0.6 miles away, making it a 5-minute drive to their home.
Fellow Reddit users quickly supported the customer, assuring them that the driver was just being ungrateful. u/Original_Signal5535 wrote, “I would have said, ‘Oops. Professionalism is part of the job and should not depend on receiving a few extra dollars. However, some workers forget this concept and believe they are entitled to those tips. In a similar instance, a woman went out to dine with a relative who left no gratuity. The latter was known to be careful with their money and avoided leaving extra cash on bills. When the server realized this, she approached them and said, “If you guys don't want to tip, then next time order takeout and don't dine in.”
The customers were shocked by her words. The woman even told her that she didn’t mind leaving cash, but that attitude was rude and wrong. Yet, the waitress remained firm about her stance, stating that she didn’t want money and was only making a point. The interaction ruined their entire dining experience. Humanity and respect should not be based on a commission.
