When the dad said his idea doesn't quite work that way, the boy doubled down and kept explaining further.

Kids find peculiar ways to describe what's in their minds. When Steve Schenberg (@husbandtiktok) was putting his son to bed, he picked a fallen eyelash off his face and asked him to make a wish. The dad asked him what he had wished for, and the boy told him that he wanted a baby brother. When the dad denied his request, his son's "stray dog" logic left him stunned. Sharing the story with his Instagram followers on November 13, 2025, the father revealed how his son's unconventional explanation blew his mind.

Schenberg, who is already a dad of four, told him that he wasn't going to have any more siblings. That's when the child came up with the idea of a "stray brother." Although Schenberg understood that his son meant adoption, he let him explain. The kid confidently clarified that, like a stray dog, he wanted his dad to "pick" a brother off the streets. When Schenberg told him that it doesn't work that way, his son went on to say he would take one, "that's just walking on the street." Expressing his reaction to his son's "stray brother" logic, Schenberg said, "It's really sweet, but I'm slightly concerned that he is going to abduct someone."

According to a study published in ScienceDaily, kids who speak their minds are often judged more harshly by adults than those who try to be polite. "This research tends to show there exists a complicated relationship with the truth that children must navigate to learn what is socially acceptable," the study notes. While most people may judge the kid for using unconventional phrasing to describe wanting an adopted young brother, the dad gave him space to express his thoughts freely while also correcting him in the process. This way, the father was able to establish a clear distinction between guiding his son on what is appropriate while still respecting his curiosity.

Soon after the dad shared the hilarious story, many users shared their thoughts on it. @toddlertowns mentioned, "Maybe, and hear me out. You adopt a stray cat or dog, and tell him it's a reincarnation of a stray boy?" @i.am.luminescent commented, "As an adopted kid, that's really sweet, but also he technically is right. There are many kids who run away from foster care and end up on the street. It’s sad but true."

@this.iconic.chronic joked, "The playground is the perfect spot to find one." Meanwhile, to stop their 7-year-old from repeatedly asking for another baby, @kfloore333 jokingly explained that the father had undergone a procedure that meant no more children. After a pause, their daughter innocently questioned, "What does daddy have to do with you having a baby?"
