Dad was wrapping up his son’s birthday pool party when he spotted a child face-down in the water — what he realized moments later left him shaken
Pool parties can end with everyone focused on packing up, putting away toys, and making sure guests get home safely. But one father's routine cleanup took a frightening turn when he noticed someone lying face down in the water. He first thought it could be an older child who knew how to swim, but something about the scene made him move closer. Entrepreneur and content creator Cole Painter later shared the experience from the birthday party on Instagram on September 24, 2026, through his account @j.colepaint.
As Painter approached, he realized the child in the pool was his own son, Cruz. He said he was "blue" and not breathing, so he immediately pulled him from the water and began CPR. When he felt it was not working, he carried the young boy toward the others and asked someone to call 911. Two men then stepped in and continued CPR while everyone waited for help. Moments later, Cruz began throwing up water, and color slowly returned to his face. The situation showed how quickly a family gathering can change when a child faces danger near water. Painter said he could not clearly remember how long the rescue took, but it felt like minutes before his son began responding.
He was then taken to the hospital by paramedics for further care. Thankfully, he was reported to be completely fine. For his father, however, the frightening scene was difficult to process even after his son was safe. Painter later admitted that one thought stayed with him during the emergency: he was unsure whether he truly knew how to perform CPR. He encouraged other parents to learn the skill and feel prepared to use it when needed. He also expressed deep gratitude toward the two men who helped Cruz, saying their calm presence made a major difference.
Their quick response showed how knowing what to do during an emergency can matter greatly. The content creator described the experience as one of the scariest moments of his life and said it changed how he viewed such situations. He also shared that posting about it was part of processing what had happened while raising awareness about CPR. As he reflected on the experience, he said, "My perspective is forever shifted, and I’m going to get better because of it. It’s crazy how it can all happen so fast." He also extended empathy for the parents "who have lost a child or loved one."
Accidents with young children are quite common, especially when they are playing in the pool. In another similar incident, a birthday celebration took a scary turn when a young boy accidentally entered the deep end of the pool and struggled to stay above water. His friend noticed something was wrong and quickly moved to help him. The boy was pulled to safety before the situation became worse. Later, the two friends were praised for their courage, with one saying, "I saw him drowning," and the other calling his friend "my best friend."
