Diner worker braced for a complaint when an older woman asked the manager to speak with him — but her next move was nothing like he expected
Anyone who has worked in customer service knows how draining it can be to deal with people all day, especially when you’re already working hard to keep up. A diner worker who goes by u/SpikeyRacer on Reddit was used to seeing customers leave a mess behind and being rude. In a post he shared on October 24, 2026, he said that when an older woman approached and asked to speak with him, he expected another complaint. But instead of complaining about the food or his service, the woman said something that reminded him of the goodness in the world.

The man shared that he works as a busser at a busy diner, and the job can be pretty thankless. He mentioned that at times, difficult customers left behind huge messes without a second thought. After dealing with so many frustrating shifts, he had grown used to the worst parts of the job. So when an older woman walked up and asked, "Can I talk to you?" he immediately thought another complaint was coming. But instead, she looked at him and said, "You're working really hard," and handed him a $20 bill. The small gesture caught him completely off guard, and it meant even more coming from someone who had taken the time to notice his efforts. As he put it, "There’s still some decent people out there."

Working in a restaurant can often make you meet people with unexpected behavior, which made the woman's words especially meaningful to him. The worker even shared one mishap that happened earlier the same day. He said he had dealt with a young couple whose 6-year-old made a huge mess at the diner, smearing a mixture of creamer and sweetener across the table and windows while his parents barely reacted. They left food scattered across the floor and chairs, leaving him to deal with the cleanup. After encounters like that, having someone notice his hard work and hand him $20 was a welcome reminder that not everyone takes service workers for granted.

People in the comments were just as happy to hear about the woman’s kindness. u/QueenOfBrews said, "That lady definitely worked in a diner at some point in her life." Another reader, u/Last-Front-6543, shared a similar habit in their own family, saying, "My wife tips the busser at restaurants all the time." Meanwhile, u/No_Bluebird7716 remarked, "There are always decent people, thank God."

A tough shift at a busy diner can get the better of anyone, but sometimes, a few kind words from a customer can make it all feel a little more bearable. Similarly, in another incident, a server at a Mexican restaurant was juggling multiple tables and struggling to keep up after several coworkers failed to show up. When he realized he had forgotten a table’s drinks, he explained the situation and apologized. But he was moved to find that the customers were far more understanding than he expected. Their kindness brought him to tears after an already exhausting shift.
