Doctor repeatedly interrupted and talked down to a mom in front of her son — but the boy's reaction afterward turned it into a powerful lesson
Sometimes, the most powerful lesson about how not to treat women comes from watching it happen in real time. Instagram user Osha Maloney, who goes by @oshashome, said her son witnessed exactly that during a doctor’s appointment. Sharing a video on August 4, 2026, she said a male doctor spoke to her in a condescending, interrupting, and mansplaining tone as she asked questions about her care. What her son said next stayed with her and turned the uncomfortable experience into a memorable lesson.
As Maloney tried to ask questions and raise concerns, she noticed her son looking back at her, with wide eyes and seemingly stunned by the way the doctor was treating her. She said she simply sat there, wondering whether he was really speaking to her that way. But the moment became even more striking after they left the room. Her son turned to her and said, "Mom, oh my God," as he was surprised by how the doctor treated her. In response, she said, "Yeah, welcome to the world of being a woman. Men talk to you that way," and said she was happy that her son got to witness this live example.
Mansplaining may seem like an uncomfortable behavior for a child to witness, but Maloney was touched when her son asked about the behavior. An experience like this can teach children an important lesson about empathy and respect. Seeing how condescension and constant interruption can make someone feel gives children a real-world example of what not to normalize. For parents raising boys especially, witnessing these moments and talking about them afterward can help them recognize dismissive behavior, respect women’s voices, and grow up understanding that confidence should never come at someone else’s expense.

A study involving 83 parents of school-age boys found that parents had different ideas about what it means to “be a man,” from traditional, rigid expectations to more open and flexible views. The researchers said helping boys move away from restrictive ideas about masculinity can support healthier behavior and emotional well-being.
