Elderly woman fell while taking out trash — sanitation worker who saw it made a move no one saw coming
Many times, doing something kind doesn’t require us to go out of our way. We can come across instances while we’re on the run, at work, en route or following our schedule and still reach out thoughtfully. When 88-year-old Opal Zucca had a bad fall while taking out the trash, her daughter, Colette Kingston, didn’t have to worry much, according to CBS News. The waste management worker, Bill Shelby, came up with a gesture of a gentleman and has been practicing it ever since. Without a doubt or expectation for anything in return, the sanitation worker decided to do his job — with a touch of kindness and it worked magically.
The elderly woman witnessed a worrisome fall when she was taking the trash out. She had been trying to bring the dustbin to her driveway when she fell. "Thankfully, her trash guy was there and helped her back up and stayed with her until the ambulance arrived," Kingston recalled. The trash guy was Shelby himself, who ensured the woman was alright. However, ever since her fall, Shleby took it on himself to ensure the elderly woman was not troubled, at least when it came to throwing away the trash. He came up with an unexpected solution that had the family and the internet caught off guard.
In footage captured by the Ring camera, Shelby is seen walking hand in hand with Zucca. He also held her trash can and dragged it through her driveway for her. Ever since the fall, the worker ensured he took the trash can for Zucca and got it back too. While he was at it, he developed an uncanny friendship with the woman. In the video, the two can be seen having a heartwarming banter as Shelby, like a pure gentleman, holds Zucca’s hand and guides her through the driveway to her doorstep. He carefully left her to walk into her home and placed the dustbin in a corner. “Good to see you!” he said to Zucca.
“Bless you, darling,” Shelby added, before leaving, moving the elderly woman to greet him back with an equal amount of love. To make the conversation even more light-hearted, he complimented her hair. “You are looking good. I like that hair. You got it down. I got to work on mine,” he said with a chuckle. With a smile on her face, the woman thanked Shelby and bid him goodbye. Kingston was moved to tears when she saw the footage, per FOX 31 News. It was a gesture filled with pure love and one can’t get enough of it. “I’ve kind of seen him on different videos but never really paid attention. He was so gentle with her,” she remarked.
Kingston noted how sanitation workers often go unnoticed. “Most of the time, you don’t even know their face, let alone a name,” she said. However, Shelby had left a mark on the family’s heart. Zucca personally whispers a prayer for the man. “He’s just a very wonderful person, and I really appreciate it,” the elderly woman said. “It’s just so sweet that somebody that doesn’t have any gain in this would be just extra nice to her.
