That was the reality for a TikTok creator who goes by Diamond. Sharing on her handle @diamond.deeee, on Friday, July 17, 2026, the woman revealed how she received a FedEx notification for a package sent by her company to her old address. She assumed it was a mistake until her manager confirmed it was real and described it as a gift from the company. But nothing could have prepared her for the shock that came when she opened the package.
The package arrived through FedEx Express, making her assume it contained something genuinely valuable. She drove to her old address, eager to see what her company decided to acknowledge her with. What she found was a plush toy called Sideline Sam, describing it as an "emotional support desk companion." The package also included an AI playbook that encouraged employees to embrace artificial intelligence. It also claimed that the AI available today would only continue to improve and urged workers to stop worrying about not being technical enough, lacking time, or fearing that bots could replace them. The "gift" was far more jarring because she herself was one of the employees who strictly forbade the use of AI in her work.
The surprise was also especially painful because, according to her, she had spent years at the company without receiving a single meaningful benefit. She said employees didn't get bonuses, gift cards, paid lunches, paid trips, or even raises that reflected their work, adding that the company's insurance package was below average. When workplace loyalty is met with a gesture that feels out of touch, it quickly creates a negative impression. Diamond's experience also comes at a time when many companies are actively encouraging employees to adopt artificial intelligence in their daily work. Businesses, including Shopify, Duolingo, Meta, and Box, have introduced AI-first policies, with some even considering usage in performance evaluations or requiring managers to justify hiring by showing AI cannot handle the work, according to The Washington Post. At the same time, Microsoft's Work Trend Index found that while employees are increasingly using the technology in sophisticated ways, many organizations are still struggling to provide the required training and support. Recognition has the power to strengthen workplace morale, but only when employees feel it acknowledges their contributions rather than a company's priorities. Otherwise, even the most carefully planned gesture can leave a lasting impression for all the wrong reasons.
