Employee was rude to every customer — until a heartbreaking confession about his mom left one of them consoling him
A stressed colleague or worker is not necessarily rude; they likely have a lot going on that others know nothing about. This became clear to Facebook user Jeff Wright during a visit to Subway. He noticed the employee was snapping at every customer. In his video shared on his account @realJeffWright on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, the man revealed that when it was his turn, he decided to make things easy and ordered a simple ham and cheese sandwich. He got into a conversation with the worker and learned that behind that anger and impulsive behavior was a much deeper problem.
The employee was yelling at customers and was clearly in a bad mood. Hoping to take the burden off, Wright tried to have a light conversation with him while placing his order. Calling it the "easiest" one he'll have all day, he requested a ham and cheese sandwich. The worker scoffed and asked what type of cheese he wanted. The customer explained that the meal was for his elderly mother and it didn't matter which cheese he used. "You're the expert," he added. That simple exchange made the man stop for a second. He shared that his own mother was in the hospital and could die at any moment, but he couldn't get off work to see her. The confession left Wright heartbroken. Rather than seeing an angry worker, he now saw someone struggling with a painful family crisis while still trying to get through his shift.
Wright explained that he would have left the job immediately if he had been facing the same situation and would have gone to the hospital. However, he recognized that his own circumstances might allow such a choice, but the employee may not have had that freedom. He said, "Understand that you don't know what they are going through" when dealing with someone who seems rude or difficult. His point was that a person's behavior can be shaped by problems that strangers cannot see. He added that we should "try to cut people some slack" because there's no telling if we would respond differently when faced with similar dilemmas.
Kindness can go a long way, especially when someone is having a rough day. In another incident, a father noticed how hard a young waitress was trying during her first shift at a restaurant. She was nervous at first, but stayed helpful throughout the meal. She ensured their drinks were filled and even brought extra napkins when his young son made a mess. When the man paid $30 for an $18 bill and informed her to keep the change as her tip, the server started crying. She explained that she had worked for 4 hours without receiving any tips. Wanting to comfort her, he said, "Sometimes people tip badly not because you aren’t a good server, but because they aren’t good people.” His simple words gave her the motivation to keep giving it her all, and it turned out to be just the inspiration she needed.
