Entitled roommate’s 'just joking' insults wore her down for months — until her quiet revenge turned his words against him and he moved out
Some people have the strange habit of putting others down in the name of a “joke.” Such was a Reddit user's (u/TameGranite) former roommate, who never missed an opportunity to throw insults her way, according to her post shared on January 21, 2026. While the user had once tried to make him understand how his comments felt insulting, he turned it against her for being "too sensitive." However, one day she decided to follow his feedback, and her quiet revenge led him to move out of the house.
I got quiet revenge on my roommate by letting him live with his own words

The Reddit user shared a house with a roommate she knew from college. Although they weren't close friends, they shared a cordial relationship as roommates. However, there was one problem that she had to deal with. The user described him as someone who often framed insults under the guise of "jokes." She wrote, "Stuff like 'must be nice to have an easy job' when I worked from home, or 'wow you're really sensitive today' if I asked him to clean up his mess."
She explained that whenever she confronted him about it, he would brush it off with a laugh and accuse her of reading too much into it. She also shared that he often gave her unsolicited advice about the way she cooks or folds laundry. When she tried to address her concerns, his response surprised her. He said he was simply being truthful and believed people needed to be tougher. "That sentence stuck with me," she wrote.
Following that conversation, she began treating every single insult or jab he threw at her as a useful piece of advice. When he said things like she was being dramatic, she would write it down in her notes. While he failed to notice at first, one night when they had their friends come over, his usual insults backfired. When he mocked her for being "uptight" about doing dishes, she responded, stating, "You told me before that honesty is important, so I'm glad you're being honest." He laughed nervously but was clearly confused by her reaction.
Soon, she stopped covering for him. When their landlord complained about the overflowing garbage, she revealed, "Oh, he said it’s not a big deal." People began to view him differently, which prompted him to confront her about being “passive-aggressive.” But she made it clear to him that she was just following his advice and wasn't angry at all. Luckily, a month later, he moved out, informing a mutual friend that his roommate was "hard to read."
Soon after her post gained traction, many praised the user for her calm demeanor. u/InterestingLeader822 wrote, "Psychology right there! Great job!" u/deadhead4077-work commented, "I would not subject myself to living with that person, period, and would've moved out instead of this passive aggressive s***, so not worth especially if they're not even a friend." u/No-Dragonfly8326 shared, "Handled incredibly well! Forced his brain to think, and he hit the eject button."
