Observation is a skill that can save a life, and that is exactly what happened in a recent story involving a 16-year-old. A Detroit clerk named Abdulrahman Abohatem, who worked at a gas station, felt something was off when an adult man asked a teenager to pay for his cigarettes. He kept his eyes open for anything suspicious. That's when she mouthed one word to the worker that prompted him to call the cops. Reported by WXYZ-TV Detroit on April 15, 2026, it was revealed that something serious was later uncovered.

Abohatem was working at around 7.30 am when a man and a teenage girl walked in. "When he asked her to pay for the cigarettes, I stopped and went, 'There's something wrong,'" the worker recalled. He paid close attention and found the youngster mouthing the word "help." As soon as he noticed that, he immediately intervened and guided the girl to safety. He positioned himself between the two and took the victim away from the stranger, before kicking him out of the store. He contacted the cops, who took the man into custody. Turns out, the 16-year-old was abducted minutes before their stop. The perpetrator was armed, and the employee's simple act of recognizing what she said saved her life.

According to the International Center for Missing and Exploited Children, around 460,000 children go missing in the United States every year. Data from Statista revealed that in 2024, 198,686 young women and 169,412 young men under the age of 21 went missing. The teenager in this incident was reportedly held at gunpoint while waiting at the bus stop. Luckily, she is safe today because someone took notice and intervened. The clerk's smart move of first ensuring the safety of the victim and then holding down the kidnapper deserves applause. What must also be commended is the youngster's sharp thinking that prompted her to find a way to call out for help.

In another story, ex-pro figure skater Lane was at a bar all by herself when she noticed a man lurking around her. When she suspected his intentions seemed off, she quickly went to a couple and mouthed the phrase "Help." "He was downright creepy, like where you could feel the 'off' vibes just oozing from him," she recounted. The woman, named Sarah, and her husband instantly understood and stepped in to walk back to her hotel. She later expressed her gratitude to the duo, saying, "I think about you a lot and hope you are well."
