Gym manager was criticized for hiring an obese man at the front desk—years later, she couldn’t believe what he’d done with the opportunity
Everybody deserves a chance at proving their mettle, regardless of their appearance. Threads user Dr. Jolene Brighten (@drjolenebrighten) previously worked as a manager at a gym in her 20s. When she hired an obese person to work at the front desk at their gym, she received criticism from other coworkers for hiring a person who did not appear "healthy." However, what he did next left her feeling inspired to this day. On Monday, May 18, 2026, Brighten shared the story about what happened after the man was underestimated by others around him.
Brighten never paid attention to any of her colleagues' remarks, as she was impressed with his sincerity and his zest for working hard. "He was delightful, willing to work shifts no one wanted, and genuinely smiled during the obscenely early hours we had to be there." She stood by her decision despite the criticism, and it led to the most positive change in the man's life. As the man's job came with a free gym membership, he decided to work out consistently, and it finally paid off.
"Because I live for the people who are underestimated and then shove all that smack people were talking straight down their throat. He still inspires me to this day," she noted. A report published by Lakeside Psychology highlighted the importance of accepting all body types. It pointed out that body shaming is often not targeted at individuals but is a way for people to project their own insecurities. "How about we accept differences in size the way we do with other features in our friends? Children do this naturally, and maybe we can learn something from them," the report noted.
When all of her coworkers mocked her for hiring a man they deemed a "misfit" for the front desk, she stood her ground and gave him the chance to prove his worth. Because she saw beyond his weight, she recognized his determination and sincerity at work. Additionally, his decision to use the opportunity to regain his health continues to serve as an inspiration to Brighten.
Brighten's story struck a chord with internet users who shared their reactions in the comments section. @monique.fatuch remarked, "Thank you for seeing more than just the exterior. The world needs more people like you!" @silviawilm penned, "Hiring quality employees is worth its weight in gold over someone who looks good. You did the right thing." @christarosenyc noted, "I love this story. Not that anyone gave him and you a hard time, but that you stood by him and he was incredible!" @jump_at_the_sun mentioned, "Sometimes people just need a chance. You gave him that chance."
