He warned his neighbor to stop relying on his Wi-Fi after her service returned — one password change had her knocking with a $180 bill

The man wanted to end the situation once and for all and changed the password, but it brought an added issue.

Neighbors usually have no problem sharing their resources as long as their terms are discussed and respected. One Reddit user allowed his neighbor to use his Wi-Fi under similar conditions. She was waiting for her internet service to be restored, and promised she would get back to using her own connection. However, the arrangement continued for months, even after her technical errors were fixed. After he changed the password, she soon arrived at his door with a bill and expected him to bear the expense. He later shared the situation on his account, u/Mundane-Gap3328, in a post on Friday, August 21, 2026.

The neighbor had initially asked to use his Wi-Fi after her provider gave her a two-week wait before the issue could be addressed. Since their homes shared a wall and his router was close by, he agreed. Her service returned within a few weeks, but she continued using the connection. He politely raised the matter in the fall and again in January, and each time, she said she would arrange her own connection. Meanwhile, the shared usage caused problems because he worked from home and relied on good speed for client meetings. Frustrated with her negligence, he decided to change the password and end the hassle once and for all. The situation became serious when the neighbor's son had an online college exam and could not access the internet. He could not submit his work in time. The mother then told the man he would be responsible for paying the $180 fee for another attempt.

The following day, the mother came to the man's house and asked him to cover the fee, arguing that he knew her family depended on his connection. She felt a simple message beforehand could have prevented the problem. The man disagreed, explaining that he had already raised the issue twice and added, "I am not responsible for providing internet to the house next door." From his perspective, the service had been a favor, not an obligation. She argued that, regardless of their previous conversations, he could have warned her before ending access.

Respecting boundaries, especially between neighbors, is important to prevent unnecessary conflicts. In another incident, one homeowner became suspicious after noticing that fuel kept disappearing from his yard. The gas can was "always nearly empty," even though his mower had a much smaller tank. He soon discovered that his neighbor had been taking it without permission. To confirm his suspicions, he set up a webcam and caught the man entering his property. Instead of confronting him, he filled the can with urine and left it outside. He said it "still smells enough like gas to fool an id**t." When the neighbor eventually used his lawnmower after stealing the gas, it stopped working, leaving him frustrated. The same happened with his car as well. The quiet revenge likely also taught the person a lesson to never steal.
