Husband joked about his wife ‘washing the dishes’ while shopping for a sink, expecting staff to laugh — their response wipes the smile off his face
Standing up to someone doesn’t always mean confronting them or saying something back. Sometimes, simply refusing to play along can make a point. That’s what a Reddit user, u/starla_blabla, experienced at work when a male customer made a sexist joke about his wife while asking about a kitchen sink. In a post shared on September 6, 2026, she shared that she could tell he expected her to laugh, but instead, she gave a quiet response that made him uncomfortable.
The woman explained that she works in a male-dominated field where her company sells home renovation items, including kitchen sinks. One day, a male customer came in with his wife and asked about a sink that was on sale. He said the size looked good, then turned to his wife and asked, "Is it big enough for you to wash the dishes, woman?" The 'joke' clearly wasn’t funny to his wife, who rolled her eyes and shook her head in disappointment. The customer then turned to the salesperson and waited for her to laugh. He also made a hand gesture to her in order to say "come on." But she chose not to respond; instead, she kept staring at him, building the tension until he became uncomfortable and changed the topic.
For the woman, the moment meant more than just refusing to laugh at a bad joke. She said she had grown up around very misogynistic people and often found herself fawning or going along with things even when she felt uncomfortable or disrespected. This time, though, she didn’t feel the need to make the man comfortable at her own expense. She simply stood her ground in a quiet way, and afterward, she felt proud of herself for doing it. She said, "Maybe he will think about my reaction later, or maybe he won’t," but said she would leave work feeling good about herself.
Her post resonated with other women who had dealt with similar "jokes." One user, u/Teacher_Crazy_, shared a story about being at an amateur comedy night, saying, "I was at an amateur comedy night, and one guy was trying boomer humor jokes about his wife and getting crickets." u/sim_reddit said, "Was just at a wedding, best man speech included a period joke, he got booed. Those jokes aren’t even funny; what a loser." While u/TheLostGhost92 felt more sympathy for the wife than anything else. "Feel bad for the wife though, she has to deal with this stand-up comedian every day," they wrote.
Refusing to laugh along can sometimes be its own way of standing up for someone. In a similar story, a security guard made a cheap remark about a woman during a routine check, saying she was not "following instructions." He then turned to her boyfriend, said, "You got your hands full with that one", seemingly expecting him to laugh along. Instead, her boyfriend simply looked at him and said, "I love that girl." He didn’t argue or make a scene; he just refused to play along at her expense.
