Is staying loyal to 'the yellow pillow' perfectly normal? Man's tweet has hilariously divided the internet
When it comes to a peaceful sleep, each person has some preferences. Whether it’s their favorite blankets or PJs, people have their essentials to get that perfect, good night’s sleep. Of late, there has been a theory of a “yellow pillow” floating around on X, as per HuffPost. The bizarre theory refers to using the same pillow that has turned yellow from decades of use, simply because you’re used to it. However, this created quite an amusing debate on social media. A man, who goes by @largemotorcycle on X, shared a picture of a yellow pillow belonging to him and wrote, “Girlfriend is mad at me because I have revealed to her ‘The Yellow Pillow.’ Fellas, I’m sure you all know that this thing is magic.”
With people of two different spectrums, one side argued that the same pillow is capable of the best sleep. For others, the idea was just horrendous to even think of. The name comes from a not-so-satisfying logic. Using the same pillow day after day without a cover causes spit, drool and different kinds of materials to deposit on it and create a buildup, per Sleep Foundation. When not cleaned properly, it leaves a stain on the pillow and makes it appear yellow. Even wet hair, beauty products and other cosmetic ointments can cause permanent stains on pillows. These yellow, stale-looking patterns can appear after a single use or even after months of usage. However, most of these are hard to get rid of.
The debate was whether they should be changed or retained because they offer the same relaxing sleep, compared to newer pillows that lead to disturbing nights and require time to get adjusted to. In a thread, the man justified himself, “It’s not my fault the pillow is yellow and bestows upon me the most peaceful slumber.” Several people agreed with this theory. @erin_kimiko_ann said, “I've had 2 pillows turn yellow on me over the years and by the time they became off-white they were the comfiest ever. Getting new pillows to be comfy is a hassle.” @jer7rej remarked, “I call mine ‘goldenrod.’” @JacobTSharp added, “I got rid of my yellow pillows maybe a year ago and I legit haven't rested comfortably since.”
@xoupgone relatably noted, "That one pillow is so loyal and I don't have it in me to throw it out. It's been with me through the hardest times.” @JennerJinks said, “The yellow pillow is the most important thing I got in our divorce.” @SwaguarTV honestly said, “You'll have to pry my yellow pillow from my cold, dead hands.” However, allergist Dr. Neeta Ogden noted in a conversation with HuffPost that sleeping with a yellow pillow might not be the best option. While it doesn’t have immediate problems, it is an inconvenience. “The discolored pillow reflects an accumulation of moisture of body oils and sweat. This, and the human skin scales that are present in our bedding, can be an optimal environment for dust mites which can then be the cause of allergies,” she explained.

She added that this could cause hygiene-related issues for the skin and the body. Others understood this concept and had opinions on the same. @kvtiebug added, "My boyfriend has a disgusting pillow like this and won’t let me throw it away or replace it." @warmachinev2 said, “Bruh, wash it regularly, it is your fault.” @Sandpapersouls remarked, “I have dust mite allergies and this photo alone triggered an asthma attack.”
