Maid of honor suggested a cheaper bachelorette when bridesmaids couldn’t afford the trip — bride’s response made her rethink their 8-year friendship
Being a bridesmaid can get expensive quickly, but most brides would probably expect their friends to understand when a plan is simply out of their budget. For one maid of honor, that became a problem when her bride friend refused to consider other plans apart from what she wanted for the bachelorette party. On September 9, 2026, one woman who goes by u/Hungry-Refuse4705 on Reddit shared a situation concerning her friend's wedding where the bride's demands had started to change how she saw their eight-year friendship.
In the post, the maid of honor mentioned that the bride had four bridesmaids, three of whom were friends from her school. According to her, they couldn't afford an international trip. The bride had recently bought a new Lexus before quitting her job for health reasons, while her wedding was already $13,000 over budget. The maid of honor told her she thought the whole idea was a terrible one and offered to plan and pay for something local instead, suggesting a spa day, a nice brunch, or even a trip to a custom perfume maker. Their city was already a popular bachelorette destination, but the bride still refused to consider any of those options. She would send messages like, "I want you to come so bad," even after everyone had made it clear they could not afford the trip. That was when the maid of honor started questioning their eight-year friendship.
The situation became even more frustrating when she kept trying to convince them anyway, even though the post said she was willing to cover her own expenses. The maid of honor also felt hurt because the bride had chosen the same destination as a trip she had already planned for the following year with another couple.
There was another detail that made the whole situation sting: the bride had been her maid of honor a few years earlier but had not planned a bachelorette party for her at all. Still, the maid of honor made it clear that she was not ready to throw away an eight-year friendship over one bad experience. She said she knew her friend was acting like a “bridezilla” and hoped she would eventually get over it.

The comments were not quite as forgiving. Reddit user u/classicicedtea suggested, "If she won’t accept your proposed alternative then tell her she can pay for the whole thing herself." While, u/Sugar_Mama76 joked, "Take her to Olive Garden, get her the Tour of Italy, and tell her it’s the international vacation on all of your budget." Meanwhile, u/mynameisnotsparta asked out of frustration, "Where does she think you are going to get money from? A tree?"
This is not the first time a bride’s wedding expectations have put a strain on a friendship. Previously, another bridesmaid said her financially struggling best friend expected a $1,000 wedding gift. Even after she explained that she could not afford it because of unexpected medical bills, the bride called it "disappointing" and said it could "reflect poorly" on her. Much like the maid of honor, the situation left the woman questioning whether she should attend the wedding at all.
