Man and his dog walked past the same house for 9 years — one day his dog went wild and pulled him toward it, prompting a 911 call

Many people wish they had instincts as sharp as a dog's, and this story from Ashland, Virginia, proves exactly why. As reported by 12 On Your Side on March 4, 2026, a routine walk between the dog-parent, Dan DiCandilo, and his beloved canine, Gozier, suddenly took an unusual turn. The pup began barking in a way her owner had never heard before. Although ignored at first, DiCandilo had to give in when Gozier's barking grew persistent and louder as he was pulled towards a house. What she was trying to alert him to soon became clear.

“The bark had a little cry to it. It was different," he informed. It further confused him because this was a house they crossed almost every day for 9 years. However, upon closer inspection, they found an unconscious woman lying on the porch. The woman had no shoes, gloves, or a hat, and the temperature was 15 degrees. “It was a woman who was on her back in a white robe, which camouflaged her and made it impossible to see from the road,” he added.

As DiCandilo looked closer, he realized how serious the situation was. The phone camera on the neighbor's door showed the woman crawling onto the front lawn at 4:15 a.m., before collapsing on the steps, three hours before DiCandilo arrived with his dog. Gozier’s instincts proved lifesaving in that moment. DiCandilo checked with the homeowner and discovered that the woman didn’t live there.

He immediately called 911 and stayed with the woman while waiting for help. However, a dog does not perceive time the way humans do, and for Gozier, no help had arrived yet, so she kept barking. The victim was later rushed to the hospital and spent a week in the ICU. "Her body temperature was 78 degrees, and somehow she survived," DiCandilo said.

The story soon touched many people, with viewers praising Gozier for her sharp instinct and persistence. Many even called the dog a true hero, saying her refusal to ignore the situation made all the difference that morning. “Dogs are special; they have that sense that we don’t have, and obviously, that was well displayed that morning,” expressed DiCandilo. “It’s like a proud father, that’s my little girl.” On March 10, 2026, the Town of Ashland also held a ceremony in honor of the dog.

Even without words, dogs find ways to alert humans when something isn’t right. Another remarkable story involved a shelter dog named Sienna, whose instincts also proved lifesaving. The former stray was greeting visitors at a Friends of Campbell County Animal Shelter event when she suddenly left the crowd and approached a stranger. As the shelter later described it, “She sat quietly at his feet, refused to budge, and softly placed her paw on his leg.”

Moments later, the man’s wife rushed over and revealed he was likely experiencing a seizure. Sienna’s unusual behavior had alerted people before anyone noticed the warning signs. Reflecting on the moment, the shelter wrote, “Sienna knew. Before any human saw the signs, she knew,” again highlighting the gifted intuition dogs possess that helps ensure human safety from time to time.
