Man noticed odd feature in old photos of his house—then found baffling secret hiding behind the walls

Old houses might come with their share of memories and secrets as well. A man noticed an odd detail in the old photos of his house and decided to uncover what was going on. The house was around 500 years old and the detail was present around the bookshelves. The man, Freddy Goodall, decided to move the books on one particular shelf and find out what was hidden behind it. The British property developer, who goes by @freddygoodall on TikTok, was pretty surprised by what he found. The clip received over 4.6 million views on the platform.

Goodall was clearing up some of the bookshelves and found out that the wall behind the shelves was actually hollow. He then showed a photo of the room from back in 1870 and a handle could be seen on the bookcase. "First thing I am going to do is clear all of these books," the man explained. He emptied the shelf and removed all of the screws from the wood. Once he removed the wooden cover, the man could see that there was actually a hidden room behind it. There was also a way to go underground and a staircase that led to the floor above. "I can see a large wasp's nest over here. This room is huge. My light can only reach upto there."

The man from Sussex, England, was looking around his family's estate when he discovered photos and the clue to get to the hidden rooms. "I searched for it but couldn’t see anything at first, then realized it was hidden behind a bookshelf. Eventually, behind one of the books, I found a hole that looked into the hidden room," he told The New York Post. The man explored the house further and found a safe that held books from 1848 and had information about property and letters. Goodall believed that the safe hadn't been in use for quite a few decades now. There were also unknown names and dates written with chalk on one of the brick walls. The house served as a school in the 1900s and the hidden passageways held school books and desks as well.
"I believe they were servant passages that ran under the house and used this to get back and forth from their quarters without being noticed. Some of the underground rooms have been built over the top as one has flagstones which we believe is where they kept the horses," Goodall continued. The house was full of passageways that led to many rooms and tunnels. "The passageways run all the way from one end of the house to the other. When the passageways were in use, I believe there were some running miles underground to nearby buildings and a church," per Zenger. People were intrigued by the mysterious house and expressed the same in the comments section of the video.

@smidday wrote, "Your house is older than America." @fredonasminis commented, "Probably originally a priest hole, maybe? To hide the catholic priests in Protestant England?" @reeree7351 remarked, "I would've screamed if I saw that wasp's nest so close to me." @jaxzv remarked, "My man, someone who actually shows what is behind the wall in the same video." In another clip, Goodall explored the tunnels and passageways even further.
