Man repeatedly tried to take a 10-year-old girl’s window seat on a flight — then stole it while she was away, and his excuse appalled everyone
Every passenger wants to enjoy a comfortable travel experience, but that shouldn't come at the expense of someone else. A Reddit user shared a post on March 18, 2022, recalling an experience from when she was 10 years old. Later, reported by the Irish Mirror on June 23, 2026, she revealed that she had been flying alone from Jamaica to the U.S. Her folks had deliberately purchased a window seat to ease her fears and help make the trip less intimidating. To her surprise, a man sitting in the aisle seat kept pestering her to switch. Later, he stole her seat, defending his actions with an unbelievable reason.
Since she was traveling alone, she was very grateful that her grandmother picked a window seat for her. A man sitting in the aisle seat tried to manipulate the little girl by repeatedly asking to switch seats. She refused and said “No,” multiple times, only for him to keep insisting. A little while later, when she went to use the restroom, she returned to find the passenger in her seat. Frustrated, she asked him to move back to his own seat, but he refused. He tried to argue until the flight attendant asked to see both of their tickets and confirmed that the window seat belonged to the girl. He argued that the girl “was just a little kid and didn’t properly know how to use a window seat, and it was being wasted.”
The flight attendant ultimately convinced him to move and said she would try to find him a window seat elsewhere. The journey continued smoothly until the girl landed. At the airport, the flight attendant told her she had been rude and had created a scene. The 10-year-old insisted that she hadn’t done anything wrong. She was too young to argue back, but definitely knew how to stand her ground.
Even years later, she remembered the bullying she experienced on that flight. Commenters had no doubts about who they supported. u/Stuff_And_More said, “What a brat, maybe he should have bought a window seat if he wanted one.” u/kaett remarked, “The fact that she blamed you for his audacity is just baffling.” u/BodaciousVermin mentioned, “I can't believe the flight attendant and that guy put you through that. They were way out of line.”
No seat swap request should come with pressure or a sense of entitlement. In another instance, a passenger named Chase Cangelosi had booked a window seat, only to find a woman had already occupied it. When he inquired about it, she told him she was comfortable there and didn’t want to move. Reluctantly, he took her middle seat. A few minutes later, the traveler realized that the TV in her spot was not working and demanded that he switch back. This time, he refused, saying he was already comfortable in his new seat. For the rest of the flight, she had to figure out how to pass the time while he enjoyed watching his show.
