Married man told a woman at the sauna to sit on his lap and called it a joke — her husband made sure he faced consequences
A joke stops being funny when it makes someone else uncomfortable, and their reaction is dismissed. A married man once faced backlash at a sauna after making an inappropriate joke toward another guest. Instagram user Jonathan Rowley, who goes by @_jonathanrowley, shared the incident in a post dated April 18, 2026. He explained that his wife had gone to the gym sauna when a man sitting nearby made a comment that crossed a line, which later led to consequences he did not expect.
According to Rowley, it started when his wife went inside the crowded sauna at their gym. A man sitting close by looked at her, tapped his leg, and said, “Want to sit on my lap?” The comment made others in the room laugh, but his wife handled it calmly and replied, “Thanks for the offer, but I want to pass.” She later texted Rowley right after leaving the sauna, explaining what had happened. After reading her message, Rowley went straight to the gym, found the man again in the steam room, and confronted him, which eventually led to the stranger being reported to the gym staff. Rowley said the man did not deny it when asked directly and instead laughed it off, saying, “It was just a joke,” and claiming he says similar things to others as well.
He also admitted he had made such comments to four other women before. Rowley said he could not ignore this and called the behavior out directly in front of others. Repeated “jokes” like this can quickly become harassment when they are not welcomed. The man became defensive during the exchange, while Rowley continued to explain that the comment was disrespectful and not something that should be normalized. He said, “Dude, that's disgusting,” while describing how it made the situation uncomfortable for his wife and others around. The man’s wife was also present and surprisingly defended his behavior, which added to the tension in the moment.
Rowley also said, “It's not harmless, and it's not something women should have to deal with,” while stressing that such behavior should not be dismissed. Speaking up in such cases helps set clearer boundaries in shared public spaces. Gym staff were later informed and appeared equally disturbed by what had happened, taking the report seriously.
The incident highlights how often women still face such unwanted behavior in daily life. A study by RAINN shows that around 81% of women in the U.S. report experiencing some form of sexual harassment or unwanted sexual behavior in their lifetime. This sheds light on how common harassment is, including verbal, physical, or technology-based forms, and how prevalent it remains in public spaces such as gyms, transportation, and workplaces.
Rowley added that people often hide behind jokes to avoid accountability, which he strongly disagreed with. He further emphasized the importance of standing up in such situations, whether it involves a partner, friend, or even a stranger. He said calling out inappropriate behavior is necessary instead of ignoring it, especially when it happens repeatedly.
