Mean boy in class kept bullying girls and calling them ‘weak’ — until she used the one warning her mom taught her and shut him down

The mother was clearly filled with pride as she recounted her daughter's courageous act.

As children begin to explore the world beyond home, they inevitably face moments that test their sense of right and wrong, times when they must stand up, whether for themselves or for others. Parents use different approaches to instill courage and the importance of speaking up in such situations. A mother, Courtney Moody (@actsofsourdough), shared an Instagram video on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, in which she narrated a similar situation that happened to her daughter. A boy in her daughter's class was being mean to all the girls. However, the girl remembered her mother's advice for situations like that and shut down the bully with a single sentence.

Moody shared in the video that her daughter handled the bully just as she had been taught. The boy had been teasing the girls in her class, claiming they weren’t strong and “flicking them off.” When the mother learned about this and asked her what she did, her child replied, “Exactly what you told me to do.” The mother had already equipped her with a response, telling her that if she ever faced a bully, she could warn them by saying her mom had just gotten out of jail, so they’d better think twice before messing with her. That’s what she said to the mean boy in her class. “You better not say that because my mommy just got out of the jail,” the girl told him.

The mother was clearly filled with pride as she recounted her daughter's courageous act. Moody also confirmed that she had told her daughter to use that sentence whenever anyone bullied her, her brother, or her sister. The lesson had a simple aim: to create fear in the minds of bullies. It certainly worked; however, Moody had to speak with the teacher. She emphasized that her central message in the discussion was going to be a strict zero-tolerance stance toward bullying or teasing, like the incident that occurred in her daughter’s class.

“We don’t tolerate bullying in our family,” the mother said, firmly dismissing the idea that “no one’s coming to save you” and stressing that she and her husband will always stand by and protect their children, no matter what. However, Moody’s advice to her daughter stood out as a memorable takeaway, shaped by a careful and considered approach to parenting.

According to UNICEF, when parents talk openly with children about bullying, kids are more likely to speak up if they witness or experience it. Even if they are not the target, they can help by being kind and inclusive, supporting the victim, and speaking out against harmful behavior. Moody appeared to model that lesson, although her version included a hypothetical warning. Even so, the quick-witted mother encouraged others to raise their children with kindness, noting that you never really know whose mom might, or might not, have just gotten out of jail.
