Doctors always remain resilient to emotional moments; they try to keep it together, but even they have hearts that feel. When Threads user and medical student Chidinma Anyanwu (@amay.a100) was assessing a kid diagnosed with leukemia, the young girl made a remark about astronaut Christina Koch that broke her completely. Sharing the story on Thursday, April 23, 2026, the medical student noted the impact created by the female astronaut on young minds, and how the 8-year-old's honest and heartfelt comment created a bittersweet moment.

Anyanwu was assessing an 8-year-old suffering from leukemia when the young girl suddenly made a remark that left her completely off guard. The little girl shared her love for NASA astronaut Christina Koch. While she was being assessed by the medical student, she casually said something profound — "If leukaemia lets me, I’d love to be an astronaut like Christina Koch." Anyanwu, who was supposed to hold it together, immediately burst into tears. "She's so polite and a bundle of joy. We spent time talking about Koch quite a lot," she wrote in a thread. According to a study published in PMC, children with cancer already deal with tough situations, as compared to healthy, normal children.

The study noted that a mother's behavior system often determines how children cope with the disease and develop resilience and vitality over time. What was surprising was the level of maturity the little girl held while making the comment. She wished her cancer would let her be free so that she could fulfill her dream of becoming an astronaut like Koch. "Matured cognitive strategies such as acceptance, planning, positive refocusing, and positive reappraisal have shown statistically high positive correlation as well as coping with cancer," the study added.

Anyanwu's post met with a lot of reactions from other online users who expressed their admiration for the little girl's resilience and emotional maturity. @mychal3ts wrote, "'If leukemia lets me' With that level of outlook and perspective and poetic words, it sounds like she's already a lot like astronaut Christina Koch. Please, leukemia, let her keep on." @thenameiscasie commented, "I've been fundraising for children's cancer research for 16 years ($200k+ raised) and have gone bald 9x for these kids, they are all so, so amazing and deserve absolutely everything we have." @stacyinhonolulu commented, Oh, my heart. Was it acute or chronic? That sweet little nugget. I really hope it is chronic, even though that's unlikely in a child.

Anyanwu's story reminds us of 4-year-old Rylee, who, after a cancer diagnosis, interacted differently with her doll. As captured by the mother, instead of taking her doll on grocery and other errands, and shopping, as she did before her treatment, the 4-year-old pretended to give medications and injections to her doll, just like her treatment, giving her a lumbar puncture. The video broke the internet, with many users holding back tears watching the kid suffer. However, the resilience stood unmatched by many. While the honesty breaks the heart, a takeaway is to learn how to hope, dream, and carry on, no matter what life throws at us.
