Missing boy refuses to enter stranger’s house after being found on his patio — man uses unusual bait to lure him inside until cops arrive
A child’s safety often depends on the awareness and quick decisions of adults. In one such case, a young boy who had gone missing was found sitting quietly on a man’s back patio but refused to step inside, leading the homeowner to rely on a creative and gentle approach to keep him safe until help arrived. The incident, as reported by PEOPLE, took place in Massachusetts after the boy was last seen on Tuesday, March 24, 2026. It showed how calm thinking and patience can make a big difference in stressful situations.
Duxbury resident Ben Ruggio later shared that the simple bait he used was his chicken coop, which caught the boy’s interest. He said, “He was here for like an hour just by the chicken coop, listening to the chickens.” Recalling the moment he first saw the child in his backyard, he told Boston 25 News, “I turn my head, and I just see him sitting there.” The boy, who had wandered through a large wooded area, seemed tired but alert. Ruggio used this moment to slowly build trust. He collected eggs and offered breakfast, creating a safe and calm setting before informing the authorities.
Earlier, the 8-year-old named Callahan Pierce had gone missing from an address on Moraine Street in Marshfield around 7 p.m. that evening. He had been outside with another child and a babysitter before he disappeared without warning. Authorities later said the babysitter was not suspected of any wrongdoing. By the next morning, the boy had traveled more than two miles from his home, moving through a large wooded area before reaching the man’s property.
The journey he took was especially dangerous for a child his age. Officials described the woods as thick and difficult, with ponds, streams, and swamp-like areas, and wildlife such as coyotes. One official noted, “It's very uncommon, especially for an 8-year-old boy to run away from home at night under extreme weather conditions.” Search teams had carried out an extensive operation using drones, K9 units, and helicopters equipped with thermal imaging cameras, yet he remained undetected through the night.
When police finally arrived, the boy reacted with confusion and said, “C’mon, Benny, you betrayed my trust.” Still, officers quickly secured the area and ensured his safety. He was taken to the hospital for care after spending a cold night outdoors and was later reunited with his family. Officials described the outcome as a miracle and praised the joint efforts of responders and the public who helped in the search.
Help often comes from those who step forward when it matters, as one neighbor proved in another incident when Ricky McMahan volunteered to help find a missing 4-year-old, JoJo. While search teams worked for hours without success, he quietly searched nearby areas on his own, walking through rough land and calling out the child’s name again and again. He eventually found the boy sitting alone deep in a wooded hollow under thick trees. Later, he shared, “It felt good that I got him and he was back home safe with his family.”
