Mom caught her 15-year-old son looking back at fresh roadkill they’d just driven past— his quiet response broke her heart
Passing by fresh roadkill can instantly make adults turn away, possibly out of aversion or sensitivity. But one 15-year-old boy turned around to keep looking as his mother drove past the horrific scenario. He simply looked in silence, while something ran through the back of his mind. When she inquired why he had been focused on the visual, his response left her in tears. The mom and Threads user, Abbey Smith (@thatabbeysmith), revealed how her son's quiet yet profound answer pushed her to ponder and reflect on empathy. Sharing on May 7, 2026, his heartfelt reasoning even has the internet in awe.
Smith and her teenage son were traveling when they drove past roadkill. Instead of turning away or making a comment on it, the boy quietly kept staring at it. The mom soon realized that even after they had long passed the scene, the boy's gaze was still fixed in that direction. Out of curiosity, she asked him why he had been looking, and he confessed that he was feeling sad. Smith didn't want to dwell on the situation or pester her kid to explain his feelings. She tried to end the conversation by saying, "I totally get that, buddy. I was just curious." However, the boy continued to express his sorrow. He added, "Maybe I wanted to grieve it a little; probably no one has." His answer shattered the mother's heart, as she wasn't expecting her son to say something so poignant.
Compassion and empathy are qualities that children develop through their surroundings. According to a report by Psychology Today, children develop cognitive components of empathy as they grow older, after the emotional aspects have been formed during their initial years. They begin to realize that other people have their individual minds and feelings, and start to understand perspectives. That's what the 15-year-old also experienced; when he saw the roadkill, he didn't just see a disturbing scenario, he saw it from an emotional perspective. He thought about how there was no one to grieve for the poor animal that lost its life. Seeing this empathy that even adults often lack made the mom feel proud.
The internet, too, praised the boy for his thoughtful response. @wartzilla noted, "I hope this world allows your son to retain this softness. The world needs more men like that." @ckhellfish shared, "What a sweet kid. Let him know that I always grieve for them as well. I always say a little prayer in my head and tell them I'm sorry that happened to them." @bianca_saliba wrote, "To grieve is to love. Encourage his empathy. He is the future we need." @dee.zen76 remarked, "That makes my little heart swell a little."
