Mom waiting to pick up son found dog intently staring at her—his alert saved her son's life
Service dogs can be a great help for people with medical conditions or disabilities. However, one mom was stunned by what her diabetic 5-year-old son's service dog managed to do. The mom, Aubrie Lewis, had gone to pick up her son, Wells, from school along with his service dog, Ducky. Both of them were waiting for the boy inside the car. The windows were rolled up and Wells was still inside the school building. So Aubrie was really surprised when Ducky started staring at her intently, per a TikTok video, where she goes by @typeonderfulwells. The video received over 135,400 views.
Wells has type-1 diabetes and Ducky alerts Aubrie whenever his sugar is low or high. However, the woman was really surprised at the "insane" alert Ducky managed to give her about the boy's low blood sugar, while the boy and the dog weren't even in the same building. "I know you all are going to think that I am absolutely psychotic, but my son is in this building in his preschool," Aubrie began and pointed out at her son's school building. "I am sitting in the car with his service dog and I can see my son's numbers right here." The car had a monitor that showed that Wells's blood sugar was at 84. The dog's alerting threshold is 85 and below. "I swear he is about to alert. He was lying down sleeping and now he's sitting up."
@typeonederfulwells Ducky has amazed me many, many times with his capabilities but this one absolutely takes the cake. The ability to pay enough attention to scents to recognize HIS boy’s low blood sugar, after not seeing him at all for 3 hours, and being this far away from him is incredible beyond what most people can understand. Ducky, you are one in a million buddy ❤️ #servicedog #servicedoglife #bloodsugar #t1d #type1diabetes ♬ growth - Gede Yudis
The mom went on, "That would actually be insane because we are in the car. But he is staring at me like he is going to alert me." All her windows were rolled up as well. "I rolled the windows down for him at this point to see what he would do... Look at him air-scenting something like crazy! He smells him." Ducky alerted the woman by nudging her with his nose immediately afterwards. "I am mind blown right now." Wells's blood sugar was, in fact, low and at 76 by the time the mom reached the front of the school. She rewarded Ducky with treats for such an "insanely" accurate alert and from such a huge distance.
Wells came out of the school and Aubrie found out that his blood sugar was at 53 at that time. She immediately gave her son glucose tablets and ensured that he was okay. She gave Ducky more treats for a job well done. The caption read, "Ducky has amazed me many, many times with his capabilities, but this one absolutely takes the cake. The ability to pay enough attention to scents to recognize his boy's low blood sugar, after not seeing him at all for 3 hours and being this far away from him, is incredible beyond what most people can understand. Ducky, you are one in a million, buddy." People appreciated Ducky's ability in the comments section of the video.
@annie_photography wrote, "It will never cease to amaze me how committed the dogs are and how good they are at their jobs!" @rachel.lobb commented, "That is just amazing! In an ideal world, wouldn’t it be great if every type 1 diabetes child could have an alert dog? Wells and your family are very fortunate." @princesssarahwine commented, "We had Dexter, my little brother's diabetic alert dog and he alerted multiple times when we were home and Noah was at school 5 miles away. The first time we thought it was a coincidence, but it kept happening. They are so amazing, life savers for sure." In another video, Aubrie shared that Wells had been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes back in October 2024 and has faced his condition with resilience, even at such a young age.
