Mom was bleeding profusely after glass fall — nearby construction worker's fast thinking gave her second chance at life

There are moments when a person doesn't have a lot of hope for help. But a mom who was in a freak accident and was about to pass out got help from the most unexpected source. The Oxford woman was at home with her two little girls when she fell and her arm went through a glass window, severing a main artery and cutting through a lot of muscles and tendons. She managed to get her arm out and ran outside her house for help. However, she was losing a lot of blood and there was no help in sight, until a group of construction workers arrived, per WCPO 9.

The mom, Megan Kinzer, worked as a nurse's aide and had come back home from a 13-hour shift. Her fiancé was not home and she was in the backyard with her girls. Kinzer went inside the house to get drinks when the accident happened. Her foot got caught in the doormat and she fell forward. Although she had braced herself, her right arm went through the single-pane glass window on their door. Because of hitting a major artery, she had started bleeding profusely. However, Kinzer managed to get her arm out and ran outside to get help from her neighbors. Her phone was upstairs and running to her neighbor's yard seemed like the best bet.

"I ended up trying to run over to my neighbor's yard and I realized after probably about 30 seconds she didn't hear me. At that point, I was continuing to scream for help and I went into the garage because I needed a compress to try to stop the bleeding as much as I could. I thought I was going to pass out, so I told my daughter, 'Everything is going to be OK. Mommy's going to be fine. I am going to pass out, but please go and get help,'" Kinzer recounted. She walked to the edge of her yard and was losing consciousness when she caught a glimpse of a group of men running towards her. A construction company, Hendy, Inc., was replacing curbs on the same street and ran over when they heard some commotion.
"I just thought that the dog had attacked her. She came running out and her babies were following her and the dog was right behind them and I just saw the bleeding and it was bleeding pretty bad and I just figured, 'I know what to do,'" Joe Petrey, the construction worker who saved Kinzer, recalled. He took his belt out and wrapped it around Kinzer's arm to stop the bleeding. "I thought it was a miracle. I thought it was God sent. I thought it was just meant to be. And not only was Joe there, but half of his crew was behind him. I knew at that moment that between all of these men, I might be OK, that I might have a chance." Petrey's son called 911 and the others helped keep the mom conscious in the meantime.

The group anxiously waited for the first responders to arrive so Kinzer could get the help she needed. Once the mom was taken to the hospital, she went through eight surgeries to repair her arteries, nerves, tendons and muscles. Her arm was bandaged up and it might take a year to heal. The medical staff also revealed that she might not regain mobility in her fingers. But Kinzer was still thankful that she made it out of the ordeal alive and had a chance to thank Petrey for his kind gesture. "It was just helping someone out. That's just what I do. I love to help people," Petrey pointed out. He continued wearing the belt that saved Kinzer's life.
