Mom’s heart sank when prenatal test showed the word ‘abnormal’ — months later, doctors said her baby had defied the odds
Welcoming a child into this world is something every parent looks forward to. That's what TikTok user Malie Appling who goes by (@malie.appling) had in mind along with marrying her fiancé, Chase. However, one prenatal report showed "abnormal," and her heart immediately sank. Reported by Newsweek on June 3, 2026, the parents waited earnestly, hoping for the best after tests and results had left them terrified. Months later, doctors were shocked as they delivered good news.
Appling was in Wyoming preparing for her wedding day when she checked the maternity portal. The Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) blood test report showed one word that left her heartbroken — "Abnormal." "I felt like I had been punched in the gut," she recounted. The result indicated that her unborn son could have a rare genetic condition called Mosaic trisomy 13. The latter is associated with a lot of complications, and throughout their wedding and honeymoon, the couple was worried sick. Nevertheless, they chose to wait. On acquiring the 20-week anatomy scan, hope resurfaced — the parents were told the baby is growing well. Yet, they were still uncertain in the following weeks. To their surprise, months later, the woman gave birth her son, Jackson, and he had no complications. Doctors suggested that the results were likely connected only with the placenta.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, mosaic trisomy 13 occurs when an extra copy of chromosome 13 appears near a chromosome during fetal development. It can cause miscarriages or be life-threatening, resulting in the infant passing away before turning one year old. Appling immediately began looking up the condition online and researching more about it. While she panicked over her unborn child's health, her partner remained calm. Recalling his optimistic approach to handling the situation, she said, "He's a glass-half-full kind of guy. He never doubted our son would be born healthy, or at least he never let me see him doubt it," the mom-to-be noted.
The next few weeks seemed uncertain, Appling was prescribed maternal fetal medicine. To their surprise, at 13 weeks, when a detailed anatomy scan was taken, the doctors found no abnormalities associated with trisomy 13. "I feel like the luckiest woman in the world to walk into his room every morning and see that smile," she said. She noted how many families don't get this outcome, and so she cherishes every bit of it. Jackson continues to hit milestones periodically while being monitored regularly. Call it a miracle or fate, what once seemed like a nightmare turned into a powerful story of hope and resilience.
