Dealing with aggression in special needs children deserves special attention, patience and care. A few techniques are effective and help parents without impacting the child in a negative way. A mom shared a method she uses to calm her autistic son's aggression and how it has helped him in the long run. Instead of holding onto him, the woman has taught her son something called "safe hands." It helps him calm down, as per a video by the mom, Abby, who goes by @super_solo_mon on TikTok.

The woman recorded the time before she started practicing "safe hands" with her son and how she had to use some force to hold onto him. It was still hard to control her son's bouts of aggression. But then the duo started practicing the "safe hands" method and things got easier. The kid was getting violent when his mom said "safe hands" and folded her hands together, gripping onto them. The boy followed his mom's lead and folded his hands together and held on as well. Moments later, the boy had calmed down completely. The mom showed multiple instances of how her son calmed down when they did safe hands. "I started teaching my son safe hands a year ago," Abby shared. She also counted along with him after keeping their hands together to help him stay calm.

"Safe hands has reduced his aggression. It is a tool we use to help him wait," the mom pointed out. "It not only keeps him safe but also keeps others safe. That's pretty amazing." The woman also encouraged her son by praising him every time he managed to keep calm. "You did a good job," she said in one of the clips. In the comments, Abby shared that it took her around 4 months to help her son learn the technique. "Wow. From the first video to now is incredible. I started with modeling it, I talked about it, I counted, I would physically show him, I was consistent, I reinforced, I offered praise and we did that again and again," the caption read. "It’s so worth it. I promise."

People applauded the mom's technique in the comments section of the video. @lyns3a wrote, "Not only did you teach him safe hands…you’re teaching him a coping skill of counting when stressed or overwhelmed and how to wait. Miss Mama, you’re killing it." @jessilynee551588 remarked, "I work with autistic kids at a school and this is 100% a practice that we use. We say 'nice hands' and most of the time, they are able to comply and calm down."

@rvlifeinparadise shared, "I wonder what this does to his brain? It genuinely looks like it has helped rewire his brain to be calmer. Unreal." @morgandean05 expressed, "As someone who works with autistic adults, I just wanted to say what an incredible job you are doing. You’ve given your boy the brightest future and from one stranger to another, I’m so proud of you." @aint_she_sweet pointed out, "I’m a disability support worker and I use safe hands too! I love seeing folks using it with their loved ones. It’s such a great tool to help with impulse control and calming the nervous system when big feelings arise. Good job mama, in keeping him and others safe!"
