Older woman demanded a man give up his extra legroom — his calm response had the cabin crew treating him like royalty
It's rare to come across passengers willing to compromise their comfort to avoid conflict on a flight. A man named Spencer found himself at the center of one such situation during a long-haul journey when a disagreement over an extra-legroom seat quickly escalated. The experience, shared by him on TikTok under the handle @spencerhoogveld on May 25, 2026, began as he boarded the plane expecting a more comfortable seat for an 11-hour flight. An older passenger believed she should have the extra space and repeatedly challenged his right to the seat, but the way he handled the confrontation later earned him exceptional treatment from the cabin crew throughout the journey.
The situation took a turn when Spencer calmly offered to switch seats to help the cabin crew deal with the disruption. The woman began shouting almost as soon as he arrived at his assigned seat. When he asked if he could help, she questioned when he had booked his ticket and insisted there had been a mistake. A flight attendant soon checked his boarding pass and confirmed he was in the correct seat. Despite this, the woman continued arguing, claiming she and her husband had booked the seats months earlier. She said she needed the extra legroom due to leg problems and demanded compensation, while repeatedly raising her voice at the crew.
Eventually, the woman returned to her assigned seat, but the tension remained. Spencer later approached a flight attendant and explained that while he did not support her behavior, “if she is going to be this big of a problem for you guys, I have no problem switching.” The crew assured him he was under no obligation to move, but he repeated that it was not a big issue for him. The flight attendants appreciated his attitude and immediately began looking for ways to thank him for his flexibility.
What happened next surprised him. Although he told the crew, “That's unnecessary, but I appreciate it,” they moved him to a full row of seats and began bringing him snacks, candy, drinks, and even a bottle of wine throughout the flight. He said the attendants kept checking on him and were “treating me like royalty.” The lead flight attendant later apologized for the earlier incident and reportedly informed the woman that her behavior had been unacceptable. Spencer added that the woman remained unhappy even after changing seats, while he spent the rest of the journey chatting and joking with the crew. By the end, he said, “It ended up being a really fun flight.”
Coming across difficult people on flights is not that uncommon. In another incident, a passenger described a tense situation involving seat disputes in economy class. A mother asked him to move, saying, “Just give the seat to my kid,” but he refused, as it was his assigned seat. He explained he was “claustrophobic,” which she rejected, replying, “That's a lie!” and continued arguing. The pilot eventually stepped in, removed the disruptive passengers, and the man was able to enjoy the rest of his flight comfortably in an upgraded business class seat.
