Passenger assaulted a flight attendant and tried to open the emergency exit mid-flight — one fellow traveler knew exactly what to do
Being at the right place at the right time works best when you act smartly and astutely. Mansfield News Journal reported about one such hero on June 2, 2026. Josh Longood was on his way back from Puerto Rico on May 31, 2026, when a passenger started acting violently to the point where he even assaulted a flight attendant. In the heat of the moment, the man even tried to open the emergency exit, and as soon as Longood noticed him, he got to work, ultimately assuring the safety of fellow passengers and crew onboard. The flight had to make an emergency landing in Miami to deal with the situation.
In an interview shared on Longood’s social media on June 6 2026, he revealed that the man was reportedly going through an airline worker’s bag, and when the latter went to remove it, the passenger got violent. He immediately tried to attack him by jumping on him. Within seconds, Longood noticed and intervened. According to FOX 8, the traveler attempted to open the emergency exit around the same time. The former professional MMA fighter, who is currently a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt, quickly got to work. He held the person down and restrained him from further outbursts.
It was suspected that the man was intoxicated, and he continued trying to struggle to get out of Longood’s hold. After holding him down for a few minutes, when he attempted to move again, the crew decided to make an emergency landing. In the video, it was seen how several other passengers joined the good Samaritan to keep the person seated and under control until landing. His astuteness stemmed from his observation. The former athlete noted that the flyer seemed off from the beginning, and since there were kids and females around, he was on alert. Throughout the ordeal, he tried to be neutral and only held the person down, trying his best not to hurt him in the process.
Longood added that his priority was the safety of all passengers. He repeatedly assured many onboard that everything was under control. “It was my years of BJJ training that helped me stay calm and handle the situation,” he explained. The suspect was arrested soon after landing. Many everyday heroes are not even expected to help, but work something out to save the day. In another instance, a dad-son duo became angels for several passengers during another flight.
An intoxicated woman started throwing tantrums and acting out, forcing the cabin crew to give one ultimatum — behave or the flight will be diverted for an emergency landing. James Rose and his son, Phoenix, offered to help. They moved next to the traveler and tried to distract her. James kept talking to her, while Phoenix showed her his football cards to keep her entertained. To everyone’s surprise, it worked, and after they landed, everyone on board erupted in applause.
