Woman demanded passenger keep her seat upright so she could work on a 9.5-hour flight — what she did when the passenger reclined crossed a line
Long-haul flights are already uncomfortable. It can get even more frustrating having to deal with an uncooperative fellow passenger. One woman on a 9.5-hour flight tried to be considerate and kept her seat upright for hours so the passenger behind her could work. But when she finally decided to recline and get some rest, the woman behind her took things much further than she expected. On Thursday, October 15, 2026, the passenger, who goes by u/Exciting-Doctor3896 on Reddit, shared the frustrating experience, asking whether she was wrong for wanting to recline her seat.

The passenger said she tried reclining her aisle seat at the start of the flight, but the woman behind her immediately asked her not to because she needed room to work on her laptop. The passenger first tried to be considerate and kept her seat upright for three and a half hours. But when her back started hurting and she needed some rest, she tried reclining again. That's when things got out of hand. The woman first told her to show some "humanity" and said, "We're all in this flight together." Then she actually used her body to push the seat forward and stop it from reclining. When the passenger finally confronted her, she just rolled her eyes and gestured for her to turn around.

The flight attendant stepped in, and the woman denied doing anything wrong. The attendant eventually reclined the seat for the passenger, but the whole confrontation left her "worked up for the rest of the flight." The passenger said the woman continued badmouthing her for hours, and she couldn't relax for the rest of the flight. The tension continued even after the plane touched down. As passengers prepared to leave, the woman tried to squeeze ahead of others, despite everyone being in a rush to catch their connecting flights. Later, at customs, she reportedly pushed past the waiting crowd and jumped ahead of the line. After everything that had happened, the passenger was left wondering how someone could be so inconsiderate.

Other Reddit users were quick to take her side. u/GovtMuleX said, "If you don’t want someone reclining the seat in front of you, pick a different seat. Bulkhead, exit row, etc. I’m paying for a seat that reclines; I’m using it." Another reader, u/MD7001, was more sarcastic about the woman’s behavior, saying, "You don’t seem to understand that she’s way more important than the rest of us!" Meanwhile, u/Throwawayhelp111521 mentioned, "You had the right to recline your seat the entire flight."

Disagreements over reclining seats happen often when one passenger expects everyone around them to follow their rules. In another story, TikTok creator Sara McCoy was flying from Istanbul to Denver when the man behind her repeatedly demanded that she raise her reclined seat. Even after a flight attendant warned him to stop pushing it, he kept bothering her and eventually switched seats with his wife. McCoy and her boyfriend kept their seats reclined until it was time to land, when they raised them as required. The couple behind them complained again, and that's when McCoy pointed out that their seats were already upright. Funny enough, the other couple's own seats were still reclined.
