The woman thought he was just a nervous traveler, but he had a reason she never could have guessed.

Not every strange habit has a strange reason. Sometimes, the things that seem the most unusual make perfect sense once you know the story behind them. That's what Threads user Asim Alex learned after watching the man sitting beside her on a flight order three cups of tea without taking a single sip. In a post shared on August 5, 2026, under the handle @talizo07, she shared the simple but interesting reason the man ordered three cups of tea, giving her a new perspective on the small things people do.

Alex shared that she was on a four-hour flight when she noticed the man sitting beside her ordering cups of tea and never drinking any of them. She wondered why until the plane landed, when the man apologized before revealing the reason behind it. He said, "Sorry if the tea thing looked strange," and then went on to explain that holding warm cups helped his brain "settle down." He later admitted that he did not even like tea, but he had discovered years ago by accident that whenever he held something warm, he was able to think clearly.

It all made sense to Alex after the explanation. Throughout the journey, she had noticed him ordering tea whenever each one slowly went cold without being touched. After the drinks trolley returned, he ordered yet another cup, which made her think he was simply a nervous flyer. Midway through the journey, he opened a notebook and spent nearly an hour writing.

Looking at the three untouched cups, he laughed while explaining it to Alex. He said it probably looked ridiculous from the outside before adding, "But it works." He then packed away his notebook and left the plane. But the brief conversation stayed with Alex. Since then, whenever she's on a flight and notices someone quietly holding a cup of tea that's gone cold, she no longer assumes they simply forgot to drink it. Instead, she remembers that people often have reasons for the little things they do, even if those reasons aren't obvious at first.

Although the passenger's reason was personal to him, it also matches the findings of a study published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology. Researchers found that physical warmth can play a role in emotional self-regulation, suggesting that warmth may help people restore a sense of psychological balance in certain situations.
