Passenger picked an aisle seat in an otherwise empty Economy Plus row — then one man claimed the window seat, but his story got him moved
Airplane seat mix-ups can get awkward fast. People trying to claim a seat that was never assigned to them are not unusual. On September 30, 2026, a passenger who goes by u/sweetrandall on Reddit shared an encounter, saying they had chosen an empty aisle seat in an Economy Plus row shortly before boarding. But when another passenger showed up claiming the window seat, his explanation only made the situation more confusing.
The passenger said they had specifically chosen the aisle seat in an otherwise empty Economy Plus row a few minutes before boarding. Even after boarding, the app still showed them as the only person assigned to the row. Then a man showed up and said, "I’m in the window seat." When the passenger checked the app again and pointed out that the seat was still empty, he first claimed, "I switched with my friend." But the passenger pointed out that somebody would still be assigned to that seat. When the passenger flagged it to the flight attendant, his story soon changed. He then said he had switched with his husband so he could sit closer to his mother, who had "problems." The flight attendant asked the man for his name, checked his seat assignment, and told him he needed to return to his assigned seat.
The passenger couldn't help but question the explanation, since the man's mother was sitting in the row just ahead and there was already an aisle and middle seat available beside her. They said the man wasn’t happy about being asked to leave and started "talking sh**" while gathering his things. The passenger told him to take it up with the flight attendant, and eventually, he headed toward the back of the plane to his actual seat in regular economy. The passenger also appreciated the flight attendant's help and wrote, "Shoutout to United flight attendants fr!"
The comments showed that empty rows can be a bit of a gamble on a full flight. u/axialmeow12 wrote, "Every single time the app shows I have a row to myself, it never happens. Not once." Another person, u/Angry-Kangaroo-4035, said, "You’re lucky—if I'm in an empty row, usually the flight attendant gives a seat away. And u/strayainind joked, "Hahah, that’s why I take the middle seat when it’s Fauxlaris. :)"
A seat that looks empty can seem like an invitation, but that doesn't mean another passenger can simply take over someone else's space. A similar incident involved a passenger who had paid extra for an emergency-row window seat on a five-hour flight and happened to have the middle and aisle seats beside him empty. About an hour into the flight, an older woman asked if the seats were taken. He agreed, assuming she would use the aisle seat, but she instead moved his belongings and stretched across both seats. When he objected, she said she was tired and sore and needed to lie down. A flight attendant eventually stepped in and told her she could use the extra seat if she paid for it. She eventually had to return to her assigned seat.
