Pizza restaurant insisted a customer’s card was 'declining'—but the real reason left them checking their bank account in disbelief the next day

Although the customer contacted the bank after checking their credit card, the entire situation left a bad taste in their mouth.

A pleasant meal can be overshadowed when customers encounter behavior they believe crosses ethical boundaries. A customer who goes by u/Bluestatevibes visited a pizza restaurant where customers were required to place their order and make payments at the counter, while the food would be placed on the table. The diners were also required to dispose of their plates on their own. During payment, the cashier kept saying that their card had been "declined." However, according to the post shared on March 26, 2026, what they saw when they checked their credit card the next morning left them furious.

After finishing their meal, the customer headed to the counter to pay, but was confused when the cashier said there was an issue with their card. "He finally says that my card is only authorized for the amount of the bill. He was highly agitated. So I was like, 'So what is the problem?'" the post read. After much hassle, the cashier completed the payment. However, when they reviewed their credit card charges the following day, they learned that the restaurant had added a tip to their card without their permission.

Although they contacted the bank, the entire situation left a bad taste in their mouth. According to research conducted by the Pew Research Center, most Americans find tipping culture increasingly frustrating. The survey found that 72% of respondents disapproved of automatic service charges being added to customers' bills, while only 10% supported the practice. The survey also noted that 40% of respondents disliked businesses suggesting tip amounts instead of letting customers decide for themselves. In this case, the customer claimed they did not want to leave a tip, but the cashier allegedly implied that the payment would not go through unless one was added.

Soon after the post went viral, many internet users sided with the customer. u/ihavethesetots mentioned, "Charge back and a complaint on their business page, plus a call to the store/insist on speaking to a store/general manager." u/Interesting-Bed-8890 advised, "Call the restaurant, speak to the manager about their employees stealing from customers. Also call the credit card company." u/Effective-Peak-5593 wrote, "If it was the owner, you could actually see if a local news station would be interested in local credit card fraud."
