'Selfless' doctor who treated poor patients for free had cancer — got kindness paid back in unexpected manner

The popular proverb, “What goes around comes around,” was exhibited in the most fruitful way in the story of Dr. Michael Zollicoffer, per CBS News. The private practitioner, fondly known as Dr. Z, had outdone himself as a doctor, catering to the needs of his patients even when they couldn’t afford to pay him. For him, their treatment and health were priceless and so when he found himself in a financial dilemma and health crisis, his patients came to his rescue. They recalled the bond they had with the doctor and wanted to treasure it with an added gesture that transformed the man’s life.

Dr. Zollicoffer is not so much concerned with money for the treatment as he is concerned with his patients' health. For years, the medical professional has been giving it his all for every patient. His work ethic and zeal are one of a kind and it is evident in his mindset. "I just love people. I love to see a rash. If you say you got a rash, I'm going to find you because I love a bump on your head,” he remarked. When it comes to payments, the doctor has a mind-boggling theory. "Forget that dollar bill. I'm going to see you no matter what. You walk in that door, you will be seen. You bring your grandma with you, I'll see her, too,” he energetically said.

Having practiced for 40 long years, he is a blessing in disguise to patients. Dr. Zollicoffer has also gone out of his way to maintain his professional relationships. He has never taken a vacation and is always available for his patients. Patients can call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, there are no limitations. "He is unbelievable because you'll never meet another person like him ever," one of his patients, Lita Johnson, said. Others, too, have high regard for him because he is a people’s doctor. Unfortunately, Dr. Zollicoffer was diagnosed with cancer and that’s where he became the person in need.

"I've got 2 separate cancers — one renal and one rectal — but I won't give up," the doctor confidently said. He kept his spirits high but with his Medicare plan having paperwork issues and other obstacles, he was unable to afford treatment for himself. But he was covered. His patients had his back and there was no question about their loyalty when it was their turn to help. "Let's fight — What can we do," Johnson said. Another patient, Ray Beverly, noted, "Dr. Z will not give up on you, so we damn sure ain't giving up on him," patient "Whatever needs to be done to save Dr. Z, we're going to do it — collectively," Nykidra Robinson added.
The patients started a GoFundMe and have successfully raised $282,875 and counting. People are donating, not just for the doctor’s treatment but also so that he may enjoy a well-deserved vacation. So far, his treatment has been going well. "You know what, I'm going to say something that may seem crazy as heck. I'm thankful that I got cancer, because I am the happiest man on the planet, no matter what the outcome. America: this is what you're about! We are about giving! I can't make it without them, nor can they make it without me,” Dr. Zollicoffer proudly said.
In a press release, Congressman Kweisi Mfume praised and commended the passion of Dr. Zollicoffer and said that his patients’ overwhelming support speaks louder than words. "You would be hard-pressed to find another individual with as much passion for healing and love for his community as Dr. Michael Zollicoffer. His cancer prognoses are positive and, God willing, he’ll be practicing in our city for years to come," the Congressman wrote.
