Small gestures like jokes and shared laughter might mean more to a person than they let on. A server experienced that after she made a couple laugh and interacted with them as she served their food. It was all good, but as the couple left, the man wrote a note for her and his revelation left her sobbing in the middle of her shift. The server, Katie Miller, who goes by @k8tymilla on TikTok, shared the emotional note with the platform. The post received over 2.1 million views.

The man wrote, "Katie, I just wanted to thank you for your wonderful service." He shared that their 27-year-old daughter had passed away unexpectedly about five weeks ago and that day was the first time the man had been able to bring his wife out. "Today is the first day I have been able to get my wife out to enjoy a real meal." He added, "Thank you for making her smile. You will never know what it means to us." The caption read, "This is everything." Miller told Newsweek that the couple had come out to celebrate their 48th wedding anniversary and she didn't know that the couple was grieving their daughter before she read the note.

"She had beautiful curly red hair," Miller recounted about the woman's hair. "I told her how people nowadays are dying their hair to look like hers. She laughed and said she dyes it to hide the grays. I admitted I have some too and just pluck them out. We were all laughing." The server was in disbelief after she read the note and came to know about the couple's story. "You would never have guessed. It broke me. It hurts knowing people are struggling like that." The couple left and Miller decided not to follow them to give them privacy. "Kindness goes a long way. We can truly heal others if we're nice. As someone who's also struggling, this brought me a lot of perspective. I feel amazing about the interaction and wouldn't change a thing."

People in the comments appreciated Miller for her kindness and shared their own similar experiences with grief. @jenndanielleford wrote, "I took my son to work with me once and a single man who ordered a $3 beer tipped me $100 and wrote, 'I used to go to work with my mom too. Make sure you take him to the movies after your shift, on me.' I kept the receipt until a year ago when it crumbled." @alonnachan commented, "Being in this industry helps you know how real it is when people say, 'Being kind goes a long way.' You see people coming in after funerals, graduations, for birthdays, having their first meal by themselves. All we can do is be kind and keep their drinks full."

@sabilives shared, "One time while working in retail, I was checking out these items for an older woman and I complimented her necklace. She started crying and told me how her late husband had gifted it to her. She said I made her day." @dylanaf_ recalled, "I had a customer ask me how old my kid was after talking about him for a while. The customer paid up and said, 'Your kid is five, correct?' I said yes, sir. Handed me five $100 bills and said to use them for him. His grandson recently passed, who was also five. I haven't cried that hard in my adult life, ever." Miller often shares glimpses of her life as a server on her account. In one video, she shared all the side work she has to do after her shift is over.
