She bought her boyfriend flowers after he posted that 'men only receive them at funerals' — only for him to get mad for a reason that stunned her
"Men don't receive flowers until their funeral," isn't unheard of, whether on social media or from men in real life. Although some disagree with it, a few women have taken the effort to change this reality. A TikTok user, Mercedes, who goes by the handle @mercilane98, saw her former boyfriend post a similar story on his social media account. When she finally got him flowers, he was furious for a reason that left her stunned. Sharing on July 5, 2026, the woman revealed the twist in the end.
The woman lamented about her ex-boyfriend, who often posted a story that read, "Men don't receive flowers until their funeral." She took that as a sign and got him the thoughtful gift, but he instantly became furious over it, stating that it "made him feel gay." She was shocked and felt bad because her intentions were never negative. However, one realization left her even more confused. She revealed that the only time he ever got her a bouquet was when he cheated on her with a man. Calling out the irony, she noted, "Me getting you flowers is what made you feel gay?"
In a research study released by Flower Power Daily, men were reportedly more communicative when they were gifted flowers. As per Sage Journals, Rutgers University researcher Holly Hale and psychology professor Jeannette Haviland-Jones noted that the latter played a role in increasing proximity and had higher chances of eliciting social behaviors like initiation of conversation in males and females. "When it comes to receiving flowers, men and women are on the same playing field," Haviland-Jones said. Unlike the woman's ex-boyfriend's belief, many men express joy at receiving flowers. However, his mindset stemmed from internalized homophobia, and it finally uncovered his secret when he cheated on her with another man.
Soon after her post went viral, many users expressed their shock at the twist in the end. @Ivy Lawless commented, "I think the man actually got him flowers, and he gave them to you so he had an excuse to keep them." @a.minarchio wrote, "I was going to say, 'Honey, I have some news for you,' but then you dropped that last tidbit." @Pocketlint wrote, "The speed of my jaw dropping just broke the sound barrier, what a twist."
